Book Review: “Twilight” by Stephenie Meyer

Hello!

Since I upped my reading challenge to 30 books, I was making that decision mainly to explore all kinds of stories. If I could, I would make room to read books that have made me curious in the past but fought against it at the time or lost interest either in the beginning or halfway through, and oddly enough Twilight is one of those books. As you might know, one of my favorites: The Vampire Diaries came on the air in 2009, which was less than a year after the first Twilight film came out. I do remember taking a chance and trying to read the book at my school’s library in that time frame but I just couldn’t shake it and ended up shoving it all away.

Mentally, I had Twilight on my to be read list, but it wasn’t until all of the films appeared in order on Showtime that I was like, “okay, I’m doing this! I am reading the books.” and within a few days, I had ordered it right along with my other books on my Kindle. It was the only print book I bought myself for a late Christmas gift and the sheer size intimidated me once again, even my dad thought it was a lot at the time, and was very proud to know that I had finished it too. These 300-400+ paged books have nothing on me anymore!

About three things I was absolutely positive.

First, Edward was a vampire.

Second, there was a part of him—and I didn’t know how dominant that part might be—that thirsted for my blood.

And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

Deeply seductive and extraordinarily suspenseful, Twilight is a love story with bite.

taken from Goodreads.

The funny part about this whole thing, was my thought after I finished working on the banner above, it was simply, “would anyone be interested in another reading a review of Twilight?” I thought it was hilarious at first, but then it was, like I think I could make this different from others, to make it look like a brand new book. Eh, we’ll see what happens after this post publishes.

There is one more thing I need to point out; I have maybe seen each movie possibly once since they were all out on DVD. So, I was actually able to create what all of the characters, setting and what I was reading in general looked like, and it was so freeing! I’ve never been so proud of myself for doing this, because even though I kept seeing Billy Burk for Charlie, Anna Kendrick for Jessica, and Robert Pattinson for Edward, everyone else was very much of a blur at first but as I got towards the middle of the book, I could see different features for everything and it was interesting to say the least!

I want to say that I was pretty interested at the start, when we are introduced to Bella. It was sort of odd how Edward isn’t able to read her mind but yet we, as the reader, know everything she is thinking when she’s with and without Edward around, and as we continued in the story, I began to see this character in a new light, because I just thought she was too stoic, but learning more about her and how she thinks, was enlightening to me.

“How ghastly it would be, I thought, shuddering, if Charlie had, even the slightest inkling exactly what I did like.”

There are not very many times I will pick out favorite chapters, but I thought Chapters 13 to 16, were some of the most thrilling stories. It also answered a lot of things I remember weren’t really shared in the films. I absolutely loved learning more about Edward, how he became a vampire and what kind of circumstances were present when Carlisle gave him new life. My respect for Carlisle went over the roof as Bella was introduced to the story of how he was created and why he became a doctor in the first place. As I was reading these four chapters, I was allowing myself to slow my pace, because I have always been curious to learn more about the rest of the Cullens.

Once I got to Chapter 17, which is called “The Hunt” everything kind of changed and there was really no stopping in between because the events taking place are quick and you are automatically reading it as fast you can or at least, that’s what to me. Unfortunately, I had to stop just before I hit the epilogue, because my mom wanted to go to bed and it irked me so much to stop that I couldn’t get her out of my room fast enough; once she left though, I resumed my position and finished the book all in about four hours!

Now that I am done reading, I kind of want to restrain myself from actually watching the films and finishing the book series, in case, there is information featured that I might want to know beforehand. Of course, I’ve been waiting to watch the fist one for like two months and I don’t know when I’ll be able to receive the next book yet.

Have you read the Twilight series or maybe just one of the books by Stephenie Meyer? Do you remember if you had a favorite chapter(s) in that first book? Which couple do you ship?

DIY: Hallow-Sicles!

Today I am back with my second DIY post for this month! If you haven’t seen last week’s post, it was called “Candy Corn Banner” and you can check out the instructions on how to make your own banner!

This craft, we got started on it the same day we did the banner. Despite the fact that we were both losing energy, we were both positive and very creative that we thought we’d end up finishing both projects in one day! I still think it was accomplishment that we were able to get the first steps completed and the day I came back to her house we finished the rest of it and made a few more characters!

Again, I found this one on Pinterest but unlike the banner where it was just one link, people make crafts with Popsicle sticks all the time so there’s a mass quantities of them all over the site! However, I will include the one that gave me the idea to help you out, but everything was really simple!

14479570_1231945383536456_4594684119780330246_n

What you will need for this:

  • Popsicle sticks
  • Paint
  • Glue
  • Paintbrushes
  • Paper Plates
  • Napkins

Most that we used for these guys my nana already had in her “craft drawer” and yes, she has one of those and it’s glorious! Anyways, in the original link they used only five sticks for the characters but I honestly can’t create a whole face in that amount of room so we upped the number to eleven sticks. We lined the sticks side-by-side to make a little fence.

After we figured that out and counted multiple times to make sure we had the right amount of sticks we got started on getting them to stay together. We used a glittery Elmer’s glue that kept drying up on us everytime we tried to use it. My poor nana had so much trouble that she ended up having to take off the cap and actually paint on the glue on the sticks! Surprisingly, that worked a lot better than we thought it would!

14479700_1231948563536138_707102107228387382_n 14462939_1231948520202809_2677497953444591062_n

We ended up stopping on the project to finish the banner, so I can’t exactly tell you how long it took for it to dry completely, but it wasn’t that long! I want to say less than five minutes!

I wanted to really give myself room to be creative considering my nana was the one who had to do the beginning steps. So I decided to draw out the characters on a pieces of paper, I made a vampire, Frankenstein, witch, ghost, etc. I just wanted an outline of what I wanted on these canvases. I had my nana measure out the fences and they came out to be 4×1/2 by 4×1/2 and then I had my dad take those measurements and make me four squares on my ole sketch pad.

14344850_1229736680423993_5728715196862722509_n

When I went to actually draw anything, everything literally went to hell. I am an artist, but I’ve sort of been in retirement for the last 4 or 5 years and apparently parts of me like the status and when I started to draw out a witch, I basically tore myself down.. It was awful! Anyways, I had to find a new way to go about this so I treated it like I was coloring as that doesn’t bother me as much! And I started coloring a witch, and somehow I made what looks like a cross between a warlock and a Frankenstein monster!

14462939_1231948520202809_2677497953444591062_n

The next day I went back to my nana’s and added another DIY “experiment” to this project! I went on Pinterest to find a way to make homemade paints and I found one, but I will not deny, it is a pain in the butt because you only get the recipe. There’s nothing about getting the lumps out or how long to let it rest. So that part became the actual “experiment” but it was sort of a success! The day after my dad bought us some new paints so we no longer had to use the homemade paint, which is the reason why I’m not including the recipe in this post!

To finish our pumpkins, we didn’t necessarily know what would be easier for us to do as far as the faces went, so she drew out the eyes and nose on hers but I had to figure out a mouth and I went with the standard buck teeth; she did pretty good with this and I ended up doing the same thing but did my eyes differently. She also wanted to add “hair” onto her pumpkin. She originally was going to glue orange yarn, but we both thought it was too much orange so she used a last bit of black glitter for the hair and now he’s very cute!

14590505_1241503185914009_7060336713241802279_n 14519893_1241502289247432_7580038300579161209_n 14563299_1241503135914014_2116566213344113396_n

I decided to do two more, well at least get started on two others. After I finished my Jack O’ Lantern, that I’ve named “Jackie” I moved on to my next character! I still wanted to try for a witch so I painted a fence in a limeade green and while I let it dry I painted another fence white. For this fence, I decided to go freehand or in this case, “freefoot” and didn’t make an outline of the face. I made the mouth first and then worked my way up! It looked so cute, I was very proud of myself by the end of it!

I let it dry before I moved onto the next stage, which was doing the iris of the eyes. After that, I realized that I didn’t have enough room for the cap and I made a last minute decision to make it a Frankenstein monster, so I made a small hairline and luckily I had the ends of the sticks on the back showing so I painted those areas in black and lastly I added a lavender pupil so he still looked silly, unlike the scary monster I had pictured into my mind! His name is “Frankie” if you wanted to know!

We officially finished the craft the next day, but I felt if I added any more onto this post, nobody would want to read it. So that’s why I’ve decided to stop here! If you would like to see any others, go check out my Facebook page! I posted some sneak peeks!

Hope you all have enjoyed these posts! 🙂

What do you think of our fence characters? Who is your favorite?

Top 9 Favorite Vampires!

Okay, technically I should have had this list created and published by now, but I’ve been trying really hard to watch as many vampire related shows or films lately.

I honestly don’t know how it all started but the first time I had ever seen “vampires” that were animated on Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? and surprisingly I kind of grew to enjoy them. Since then I’ve been interested in The Vampire Diaries, Twilight, The Originals, and Underworld series. Now I’m in the middle of True Blood and recently finished both Queen Of The Damned and Dracula Untold films. So I thought I’d write up a little list of favorites from all of them or at least try to!

tumblr_lyupvmictw1qamuos

Charles Dance – “Thomas” in Underworld: Awakening (2012-16), “Master Vampire” in Dracula Untold (2014)

So this is going to sound a bit strange, but I have a small crush on Charles Dance. It’s small! And no, he’s not my first “older man” crush I’ve ever had…

I technically put him on this list because he’s managed to play a vampire in two films and found a way to make both roles stand out from each other! Charles as “Thomas” was stern but loved his son David and cared for the other vamps in his coven. His role in Dracula Untold, he’s basically alone. He is definitely more “scary” as the “Master Vampire” in that film!

tumblr_nlxzvyod2n1uokf4zo1_500

Peter Facinelli – “Carlisle Cullen” in Twilight series (2008-12)

I wasn’t really into the whole Twilight hype, at the time I already had given my heart to the Salvatore brothers so I thought that was good enough! I didn’t start watching the series until 3 years later!

I wasn’t into who everybody was crushing over. The whole divide of Team Edward or Team Jacob was not for me. My cousin Kristi and I were more interested in Carlisle. The reason why he’s at the bottom of the list is because even though he’s a favorite, I still think he was too soft. However, the goodness of his heart was a reason why I liked him so much. He didn’t scare me or come across as a regular vampire.

tumblr_nbr2tedwez1rlq5bgo1_500

Deborah Ann Woll – “Jessica Hamby” in True Blood (2008-14)

I’m stuck on Season 5 of True Blood and considering from the first episode I watched with Jessica in it, I’ve been really into her character!! I’ve seen her grow into her vampire self and it’s been very interesting to see how much she’s changed.

tumblr_lxh8k1bs5m1qgk29io1_500

Paul Wesley – “Stefan Salvatore” in The Vampire Diaries (2009-present)

I know, you’re probably surprised that I’ve added Stefan onto this list and not Damon, Klaus, or hell Katherine! In all honesty, if I really wanted to, I would add all three but I don’t think anybody is as good as Stefan. I mean, he’s learned how to control himself numerous times but I have to say seeing him lose it defines a vampire for me.

I give Paul lots of credit for being able to do so much for this role and when he played “Silas” in season four too!

tumblr_inline_mm1k2rqdoj1qz4rgp

Dakota Fanning – “Jane” from Twilight (2009-12)

I had a hard time getting into the whole Twilight scene. I didn’t actually watch the first movie until the franchise was starting the Breaking Dawn films.

Despite the fact I had a couple favorites on the “good” side of vampirism, Jane was my favorite of the Voultri. She was a badass from the very first time she’s introduced in New Moon. I almost felt scared with her fierce command as she walked into a room and then she brought different amounts of pain upon her victims and those red eyes alone could memorize you to obey her. I thought Dakota Fanning was a great choice for this role!

tumblr_lkf52czgo91qgbabho1_500

Julie Benz – “Darla” in Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel (1997-2004)

The first time I ever watched anything about vampires as a teenager was from getting up at 5am for Angel, which if you didn’t know was the spin-off of Buffy The Vampire Slayer. I feel this show was a good choice for me to really test if I could get through the whole thing of vampires, witches, etc. Not to mention the first show I watch has the characters in full makeup, they do not look like people as vampires they generally look like demons I guess you would say and as I watched this show I grew to love Darla a lot and she scared the living shit out of me at times!

tumblr_inline_mplq0wl0au1qz4rgp

Alexander Skarsgård – “Eric Northman” in True Blood (2008-2014)

I’ve been watching True Blood lately but as my friends all told me by season five I’ll be addicted to it, I’m at that season and I’ve sort of lost my interest for it unfortunately.

I’ve been on the fence about Mr. Northman though. From the very first episode I thought he was very intimidating and powerful, but as the first season dragged on I didn’t think he had that sort of attachment with me he once had and I feel bad saying that now, but it’s true. Alexander playing Eric though, hot!

tumblr_nlw2bkh3h01rp0vkjo1_500

Kate Beckinsale – “Selene” in Underworld series (2003-2016)

I still can’t believe my dad got me interested in the Underworld series. It just seems so weird because it’s always been opposite.

I honestly love the characters of the entire series, each one has their own power and brings something different to the role of a vampire. I really love Kate Beckinsale as “Selene” though, I feel in ways I wish I could be that demanding and respected as a both fighter and survivor. I can’t wait for the new film this fall!

tumblr_ma8810zo6o1rgw88uo1_500

Sebastian Roché – “Mikael Mikaelson” in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals (2011-15)

Surprisingly, Mikael wasn’t my first choice to lead the pack as the best vampire, but as I started to really think about it. Nobody really made me freak out longer than this man did especially when Davina brought him back to life. She’s gotta stop bringing the Mikaelson boys back to life!

Anyways, from the time we heard about the original vampire family and why Klaus, Elijah, and the whole crew were basically on the run from him. You know this isn’t somebody you want to mess with and the fact he managed to come around in both TVD and TO was pretty interesting! Despite him being such a feared character he’s reaction to see his daughter Freya in previous season of The Originals was very different, we actually saw emotion and him hugging her!! What the hell? Of course, he did end up being killed at the hands of Klaus  in front of Freya, the man still lives on in the mind’s of the remaining originals.

REVIEW | The Vampire Diaries (Mid) Season 7

WARNING: Spoilers below! Read with caution!

I love doing reviews, especially on my favorite shows! I’ve been thinking about doing a mid-season review on TVD since it went off for Thanksgiving break. I know a lot of you guys haven’t been watching it and I feel like you should give it another shot. This season alone–in my opinion–has been one of the most interesting seasons since probably two and three! We’re on seven if anybody is lost! I feel I’ve seen a lot of people stop watching the show around season four, which is understandable. I thought I’d stop during season five, but I didn’t. Thank god!

This season, even without our beloved Elena, has been an emotionally roller coaster ride that just keeps getting better and better! If you watched last season but decided to stop watching it because there’s no more Delena scenes and the show would just decline without her? Well, if it does that, it’s your fault because the writing for each episode has been awesome!

I have had my fair of doubts for the season as a whole and the new characters, like these new heretics. For one thing, I like these heretics a lot than I liked Kai. As a fan from the very beginning and wondering about Mama Salvatore, I couldn’t picture her becoming a vampire! Well, I did, but not like this! Lillian Salvatore came back to Mystic Falls with a purpose to turn her baby Stefan’s humanity back on during the last bit of season six. What went from a beautiful moment between mother and son kind of shattered when she was more focused getting her family of crazies out of the 1904 prison world.

The heretics that come out with her are Beau, Mary Louise, Nora, Valerie and Malcolm. However, poor Malcolm after decades and six months spending his time in a cave in 1904, he dies at the hand of both Bonnie Bennett and Damon after Stefan and Caroline agree to surrender their beloved town to Lily and her heretics after Valerie, Nora, and Nora’s girlfriend Mary Louise start a fire and kill several citizens at the police ceremony for the new members. Matty blue eyes was saved from being killed by the girls and after letting go of their home and compelling the rest to move out as there was a “gas leak” to keep them safe. After Malcolm was killed, Caroline was taken hostage and tortured by all three girls and eventually let go but not without hearing more about Valerie and Stefan’s interesting past.

If you thought you were a die-hard Steroline fan, think again!! Stefan and Valerie had a very tasteful afternoon in the 1800s while Valerie was only just a witch that was rejected from her family. She became pregnant with Stefan’s child and the man that she came to check Stefan out at the fair as a request by Lily, found out about her pregnancy and that she had wrote to Stefan to meet him one night, he followed her and beat her until the child had died. That night as Lily gave her her blood to heal her wounds from Julian (a character you’ll grow to hate) she decided to take her life while taking a bath, what she didn’t know was that she’d turn herself into a vampire that night becoming the first heretic. Beau is a mute heretic, very powerful and Lily’s right hand man. Mary Louise and Nora are probably my favorite couple right now.

Aside from the heretics and Lily Salvatore, you also have the grieving Alaric, who’s not just mourning the loss of his wife Jo, but their twins. Bonnie and Damon spent the whole summer babysitting and doing a fairly bad job at it too! Alaric had been playing the drunkness very well, and has been on a secret mission to bring Jo back from the dead with a mysterious stone. Once they figure out they’ve been played, Bonnie thinks she’d got him talked into destroying it after finding out it’s been cursed with black magic. When Alaric finally gets Bonnie to do the spell on Jo, he is pleased but not happy for the outcome. However, Lily wants the stone for herself to resurrect her partner Julian. His soul is being kept inside the stone along with other vampires’ souls too. So Jo is not Jo, her real name is Florence. After two days in Jo’s body, it starts rejecting her. Decomposing as they all start to realize what has happened. Alaric is left with another dead end.

Caroline has been tagging along with Stefan, dealing with Nora and Mary Louise. And then finding out about Valerie’s child. She agrees not to tell Stefan, but as Valerie and Stefan have a moment to discuss things, she tells him which makes him want to kill Julian after Lily and the heretics resurrect him from inside the stone. Once Damon is told of it as well, he joins in. As the challenge of trying to kill a vampire who’s been locked up in a stone for years battling his own battles. Things seem easier said then done, but as for Caroline. Her life just got much more complicated.

Before we get into that next section, Candice Accola (now King) announced to the world that she was pregnant with her first child! She announced it I think maybe a month after production of the new season was underway, and I was very curious about how or if it would be incorporated into the story line. Well it is! If you watched the last episode of season six, you remember as Kai was busy killing Jo and the twins. The coven was chanting until every last one of them were dead? Well fast forward and poor Caroline had been feeling rather weird, even for a vampire in general! Valerie discovers the tape as Alaric had decided to watch it one evening, and she recognizes the chant. Everybody assumed it was a chant to stop Kai, but it wasn’t. It was a chant to save the babies. Their coven relies on these babies. So they transfer them from Jo’s body to the next best option. Caroline! The babies had cloaked themselves inside her belly to the normal eyes until Valerie took off their protection spell and she and Alaric found two little baby girls inside her belly!

What is even more puzzling about this season is that you have TWO story lines. You’ve got the present day concept which is what I’ve just explained above, but you’ve also the story of three years later where things are drastically different. A lot of it has caused some heartbreak and confusion among fans, but hoping we know more about the two years more in the next few months. Of course I’ve left out quite a few key pieces of the season, especially about Lily’s existence. I’m hoping I haven’t ruined your day by telling you about what’s going on, but no offense! You should be caught by now!

If you’ve been watching what are your favorite characters and episodes so far? How are you feeling about the switch from Thursday to Friday’s too?

Finding My Next Book

So it’s been an hour or so after finishing my first book on the Kindle. I’m already searching for my second book. I’m trying to remember the list I had of all the books I’d like to read, but I’m not yet ready to read them yet. I want to find one at random and go from there. I should take advantage on getting the first chapter for free and going from there. I’m also wanted to find one that was really cheap. That means in my terms, under $10. My mom would me go from owing her $10 from the first book I bought. So I’m learning for very cheap books this time around.

I am actually a picky reader, just found that out recently. I love biographies and memoirs. If I knew a person’s name and watched them or read stuff about them I’d might read their memoirs if they wrote one. I love personal stories. Stories that can seem relatable in certain ways than one. I’m not much of a romantic, chick who watches corny love movies and apparently it’s the same with books too. This is what gets me, I can watch The Vampire Diaries and certain others that have vampires in them, but I’m starting to really hate them. I don’t know if it’s because most of them are all romantic based books or what. I just don’t like to really read them. I even read Stefan’s Diaries (haven’t finished the third book) and it even bugs the crap out of me.

I’m going back to my hunt on my next book. This is going to be interesting. Because I have no idea what I’m going to choice, even though I have a pretty good idea. Wish me luck!
