Dear Papaw III

Dear Papaw,

Tomorrow marks three years you’ve been gone. It may have been years, but it honestly still feels like yesterday. The whole week before and the days that came after play on a loop in my head. Originally, I had a totally different way about how I wanted this letter to go, but I’ve never wanted these to be too snappy. You wouldn’t have liked that anyways. I miss you a lot, even if some people don’t think I do. I think of you whenever I watch basketball, and I often wonder what you’d think of my knowledge about it and the four professional teams I watch on a daily basis. I think you’d be like dad and hate on the Lakers because of LeBron. I don’t blame you. I don’t care for him being on the team either. I wonder if you’d like the Rockets though since they’re the ones I seem to watch and root for the most of course! I understand why you didn’t like it because of how many attempts a player will take to shoot the ball and the whole scoring process, I’m still not understanding that part yet, but I’m slowly getting there.

On the day I wrote this letter, I went looking for a picture for the banner. I was going to attempt to find one of “Alex” with your old Butler shirt but then I found an album that nana made for us in the family to share memories and old photos, and I found one dedicated to you. I had array of pictures to choose from, but once I saw this one, I knew I had to use it. You’re wearing a Butler shirt and if you’ve been watching them from heaven, you know they’re in a desperate need of a miracle, getting through the Big East tournament and March Madness, which will all probably be over with by the time this post goes out, but you know!

I always thought it was funny how Rick would continue to buy you a Butler shirt for your birthday or Christmas and you’d wear it once maybe and then stuff it back in the closet. You were pretty consistent with your fashion in your old age. We all thought you looked adorable in anything you wore, even if you had food spills down your shirt and pants, we didn’t care. We laughed at you, and apparently you’ve been getting back at us for doing so, because we all tend to spill our food on our shirts a lot more than we usually do.

We are all in agreement that you visit little Nolan. Em posted a video of him reaching up to an invisible spirit; it gave me goosebumps! He is so smart! He actually reminds me of you in the fact that you wouldn’t really flaunt your smarts, sorry, I couldn’t think of a better word there! I think you would have loved him dearly. Now, if you can talk ChiChi into letting him pet her easier, that would be nice. He is so curious about his surroundings, and ChiChi is the only animal that is afraid of him. Honestly, if you saw him in his walker or “car” as we call it, you’d be terrified too! The best way to compare the experience is a four year old me racing around the house in my wheelchair!

Hope you are enjoying yourself wherever you are, and watch over all of us down here too, not just the youngsters. We’re still a quirky bunch but we all need an angel at our side sometimes. Although, I feel like you’d be like a bit of a jokester still, so be good too. You don’t want to get on God’s bad side! So no pranks with some of your friends up there. You told me way too many stories of you growing up with them to know that you all can get into some mischief. Anyways, I love you.

Your granddaughter,
Meg-han.

Blogmas | Christmas Decor Ideas

Howdy!

Merry Christmas Eve!

For this post, I wanted to discuss some of my early Christmas decor ideas for 2019! Yeah, I know I’m going backwards for this, but there’s a reason for it. We recently got a new house, and I’ve been trying to figure out how I want everything arranged in my new bedroom. We have an idea of where the bed and TV will be placed, but everything else is a bit up in the air right now. So, I only have a blurry video imprint in my mind of what it looks like and how I’d like for everything to go!

Whenever we’d move to a different house, my room has always had white walls. After so many years, it can get very boring looking and you just feel like you need a change and what I do is add as many posters as I possibly can! I even have some of my old artwork hanging up in my current room as well, and despite the fact that it makes the room more lively, it can still look pretty plain.

Over the years, I’ve wanted to decorate the crap out of my room for various holidays–mostly for Halloween and Christmas! A recent dream of mine is that I’ve been wanting to get a Christmas tree for my bedroom. I think I might be watching Zoe Sugg’s vlogmases a little too much because she makes me want to do stuff that I wouldn’t normally do! A part of me is torn between if this is a good or bad thing!

This month I’ve been inspired to create a Pinterest board of what I like about Christmas, the pines of the trees, bright glitter-y snow, and apparently the color red in all its glory! Later on in the year I’ll be posting some of my favorite ornaments and that’ll just add to my personality, because as most of you know, I’m a very eclectic person with many, many interests. Anyways, if you’d like to check it out, click here!

I’d like a semi-tall tree, I’m thinking maybe a 4′ tree so that I can put it up and take it down by myself. I can already picture explaining that to my parents! I originally wanted a normal looking tree, but after scrolling through my Facebook last week, a friend shared an article about the newest trend of black Christmas trees! After seeing this, I suddenly wanted one and thought that big royal purple ornaments with white snowflakes would be so pretty! I think I’d feel happy about not only myself but my new surroundings of being able to have that freedom that comes with decorating, you know?

So what about you? Do you wish you had an extra room where you could decorate it to the way you want it to, without having any judgement from others?

Blogmas | Routine Or Nostalgic?

12342321_817205301722388_1690772338282276465_n

Howdy!

Last year I was heavily inspired by one of my Facebook friends Lori, to create both this post and last week’s about the Christmas movies I haven’t seen yet. For this one, I got the idea to write about it after she posted a status about whether or not she and her husband should put up their Christmas tree. The reason why she asked is because both of her children are older now and the eldest doesn’t even live with them anymore. So, she posed the question are putting up Christmas trees part of the holiday routine or wanting to be nostalgic?

When Blondie began to date Brandon, our parents really started to wonder if it would be worth it to put ours up too. Despite the fact that I am still living in the family home, my mom still suggested the idea of just forgoing the big tree and using my little purple tree instead. I ended up getting very angry with my parents about this and they decided to invite the two goofballs, who now usually have their tree up a day or two after Thanksgiving, over to get the 20 year old tree up and decorated in our living room.

I think at that point of time, it was a bit of a routine. My mom always likes to complain that since we only have it up for like two weeks, she’s the one taking it all down in the end. I think my nana can vouch for me when I say that I could help her taking down Christmas trees, since the last tree she had, we took down like three months after we probably should have, and nobody fell out of their wheelchairs or hurt themselves either!

While I was growing up, my grandparents always put up their tree, even though they relativity lived alone. I mean, their dog Casey would knock it down every once in a while, but it would go up on Black Friday and most times it would be taken down by the end of the first week of January. They absolutely loved having their tree up. I remember hearing a story that papaw would stop in his wheelchair and just look up at it in the middle of the day. It always brought out a lot of memories; some of the ornaments were originally the aunts, we had his favorite lights and tinsel draped around it as well. After he died, my nana didn’t stop putting it up because she was the only one there. She knew that the family would be there for that day in some form and it would be worth it in the end.

I’m glad that my parents never stopped putting it up, I love looking at it when it’s lit in those rainbow colors. The sparkles are hypnotizing. I never like getting stabbed by the branches but I love putting the family “relics” at the end of each one. And this year, we have a new member that gets to be a part of the chaos. Little Nolan watched his mommy and daddy put up theirs, and I think he’ll enjoy being close to the mess and you know mom will want to get a couple of pictures of him under the Christmas tree too!

I don’t think it matters if you live alone or have a whole house full of people, you should have some kind of tree up. Everybody deserves to feel festive in some way and to me, this is what usually does the trick.

What about you, do you put up some kind of Christmas tree in your house, apartment, or even dorm room? Do you think it’s part of our routine of the coming season? Or do you think we have them to feel nostalgic?

Dear Papaw II

28535342_1768924659838523_1707063689_n

Dear Papaw,

Last year, we discussed basketball, and I know you probably really enjoyed it. I have been learning a lot of terms in the past five months and I’m really enjoying it, but wish I could have you back around so you can see me cuss and scream with joy at my TV late at night just like you. I’m actually still shocked that mom doesn’t put anything on Facebook about that actually! I know she laughs at me though because every once in a while, I can hear her behind the door!

I’m still surprised you never watched a pro basketball game though. I find those are a little bit more interesting! One of the first games I ever watched of the Houston Rockets was when they went up against the Detroit Pistons and what was so cool about it, was the fact they kept going back and forth making three point shots! I was so impressed, but unfortunately, after they went into halftime I never saw finished the game nor did I find out who won it. Now I either watch it and after halftime start recording it or I just tape the entire thing because I get really tired watching the later games!

I recently watched the Dallas Mavericks go up against the Lakers and found out that one of your favorite players from IU was a member on the other team. For some odd reason, I didn’t notice him until the end of the third quarter because the commentators were suddenly talking about him and I immediately recognized the name “Yogi”. He wasn’t the only Hoosier I’ve actually got to see play. Back in November or early December, I finally got to see Cody Zeller play! He really is a tall dude but also looks like he’s thirty years old too!

Let’s get out of talking about basketball, but don’t worry, we’ll go back to it in a minute!

As you may know, little Emily is pregnant and Kristi is expecting #2! There’s babies all over the place! Is anybody else going to announce their pregnant in the next coming months that you know about up there?

It’s still a bit of a shock knowing that she’s not only married now but growing a baby in her baby when I literally have vivid memories of her being in mom’s belly. I still remember the day we all went to see her on the ultrasound. I vaguely remember being amazed that this stick like thingy could see through the uterus and map out an image of a fetus, and as a four year old that was like the coolest thing ever! I have yet to see Nolan move on it, but there’s a reason for that. Apparently, there’s just enough room for the doctor, mommy, and daddy in the room. So I’m left seeing the ultrasound pictures on Facebook, because mom keeps forgetting to actually show me the pictures!

When we found out that Emily and Brandon were expecting a boy, I will be honest and say that I was shocked. I really wanted a girl, but mostly because we all know how to take care of girls, plus Brandon has two sisters so even knows things about girls (somewhat) so knowing that he’d get a boy probably made him very happy, but I think figuring out that Emily also wanted a boy was interesting! I mean, since it’s been announced I’ve had many dreams of her getting peed on in the middle of the day, which means if I decide to take up the challenge of changing a diaper, it will be me getting wet instead.

I think it’ fair to say that almost everybody has purchased something for them, but mom has a full bag of baby clothes, while both dad and I have one outfit picked out for him. We at least have control over ourselves, but I have a feeling you were trying to influence me these last two months with the onesie I got for him. Amazon had cute little onesies that had collars like you used to wear and mom didn’t like them! One thing though is that I do think the one I got will work better as its more casual.

28536475_1768924629838526_1468751189_n

Brandon and I are going to be awful with this kid, as he loves DC and I’m on team Marvel, thankfully he has been buying him both sides but you know if I get the chance of changing his clothes, I’m going to put him in anything Avengers. The last time we went to Walmart, I saw these Avengers sneakers and I almost got them because I felt like I wouldn’t see them the next time. We both like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles so we’re good there, it’s just colleges now is our issue. Brandon has a lot of North Carolina stuff on his wish list but I’m the good one. I’m trying to keep up with the tradition of the Butler shirts. This definitely won’t be his only shirt, as Emily saw little Butler booties and now I want to get those to complete the whole package!

Well, I think I’m done with this now. Hope you are still watching over us and enjoying your time in heaven with some of your friends too.

Love and miss you.

Blogmas | Holiday Dorm Tour!

Howdy!

So this might seem a bit strange since I’m not clearly in college and living in a dorm, and neither is my sister these days, but our nana is in a way. Well, we don’t know what to actually call it, a “dorm” or an “apartment” because even though it does come with her own little microwave and refrigerator, she doesn’t have a stove or anything, so the term “dorm” seems to fit better I think. I had mentioned in my last minute blogmas ideas that I might do a similar post of the holiday house tour I did last year. So there will be things you’ve definitely seen before, but she has some newer stuff too. Everything has basically been compact into a small area just for her.

My nana’s room is located at the far side of the long hallway (of course!) and the first thing you are greeted with when you get up to her door is this very sparkly green, with red baubles wreath. It is perfect for her personality let me tell you!

She has a few things in her bathroom, but I felt it’s not enough to show you everything, even though she took multiple pictures in case I wanted to share more of the beach theme she is going for in there. She has a green “Merry” rags over by the wall, while she found an interesting place for her giant multicolored jingle bells. I don’t know who put them there, but it is a clever place. They are located right by her shower. It adds a nice festive look to her bathroom!

24796536_1683813891682934_3479794448341188853_n

Now when you come out of there, the first thing you will see is her little “kitchen” area. Her entire mini fridge is covered with different Christmas festive magnets and her counter top has little figurines, like the infamous Christmas tree that she keeps on day and night. She has a random red ornament and IU doll that kind of goes with the theme too. She even has a lone Santa Claus that is just sitting in the corner by her radio and sink.

24991525_1683810431683280_7252767093716325775_n

Next we have is her table. It’s smaller than the kitchen table she had at the house, but at any given time she has over a hundred different things on it. When we were there a couple of weeks ago, she had a nice round red and white blanket placed on the actual table, and on top of that is this large nativity scene. She went out with my aunt and uncle for Thanksgiving weekend and picked it out at the flea market. However, she took the pictures below before she got it I think.

In this picture, she has two large objects, one is glass purple Christmas tree and I don’t know what in the world this other thing, on the left side is. All I know is that it has little people on the different levels. She has a basket full of fake greens and cherries, plus random ornaments that she must like but can’t find a good place to put them. She has angels and crosses on here too. What is really cute though is the subtle sonogram picture of the little “nugget” on the right side on the table. It’s okay if you didn’t notice it the first time, because neither did I!

23843388_1670801026317554_6730579759383415322_n

Keep going straight and you see her entertainment center. She doesn’t have much on it, but the two large angels sitting on top of it. If they were any bigger, I doubt that they would’ve fit up there. She must have found those when things were coming down from being upstairs in September, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen them before.

On the right, is her window display and I’m not joking! When I was there in October, it had all of the angels and crosses standing on the ledge of the windowsill. Now she has a lot of Christmas things, like her Noel sign she got last year, snowmen and Santa Clauses everywhere. If you were wondering what happened to those beautiful ornaments that reminded me of India, she has them hanging on by string or something like that along the blinds. She also has the bigger stuffed Christmas critters on the floor, like the fairly large and jolly Santa Claus and a pillow made out of one of papaw’s shirts.

24068220_1670799752984348_2310607487502840026_n23905376_1670801732984150_4586445862729124507_n23843373_1670800169650973_7585463103987095341_n

Alex is standing on the opposite side of the Santa Claus, she either has a red blanket around her or a shirt. I don’t think she could find the normal dressing gown she normally puts her in for Christmas so she had to improvise. Nana recently got this beautiful picture of a white cat with a violin, which I happen to love! I don’t know where she got it, but she now has it hanging up by the second nightstand.

Now she doesn’t really use her bed, because she can’t get in and out of it on her own, plus it is really uncomfortable for her back and bottom. So she actually sleeps in her lounge chair that she has decorated with her family (with Adam Lambert) blanket that she got a few Christmases ago, but she does like to keep the bed looking pretty. So she got a new blanket, and it fits the red and white theme she has going on, but it has a nice photo of a Cardinal on it. Our family looks for Cardinals as a sign that papaw is around us, so there are a few of them throughout the room itself. She also put out all of the classic creatures by the pillow too!

And that’s it!

For an added bonus, I had her take more pictures around the nursing home so you guys could see what they’ve done to the place!

They have like seven or eight Christmas trees, I think that’s what my nana told me! They have a really nice one over by their outside area. When I was there, I used to spend some free time before going down for lunch over by the green sofa on her hall. Now there’s a fairly large tree there, with some very nice wrapped packages underneath it. Nana said, she helped wrap some of them in activities and decorate several of the trees too!  They have their own nativity scene in the larger dinning room, plus an interesting blown-up elf in a corner by the nurses station. We didn’t see that when we went to visit her a couple of weeks ago for some odd reason!

What do you think of the holiday dorm tour? What is your favorite decorations to use?

DIY: Last Minute Pumpkin Ideas!

2

Hello!

We are two weeks out before Halloween (a week for those of you who will be celebrating 27th and on!) and after Monday’s post, I was really inspired to compile all of my favorite pumpkin crafts for you! I think crafting with pumpkins is a fun thing to do both as an adult and if you’re parent with young children! It’s like the seasonal coloring book you never thought you needed until later on.

For the most part, every post has a list of what you’d need and I have even done step-by-step photographs in case you get lost in my words which has happened before! I try to be very helpful in guiding you through all of the projects, some might be a little confusing and I do apologize for that. Sometimes we just made up the rules as we went along and that can be pretty fun too! You are welcome to interpret what you see into anything your heart desires as long as you enjoy what you’re doing and don’t stress about your mistakes!

  • The Pumpkins – I have many versions of how to melt crayons on pumpkins but this one is visually pleasing I think. The pictures turned out beautifully, so that is the main reason why I am sharing this one instead.
  • The “America” Pumpkin – This is a clear example of a last minute pumpkin idea, my nana and I actually worked on this early November and I published the post later that month while we discussed what we were going to do for Christmas! This is probably the simplest one out of the bunch!
  • Awareness Glitter Pumpkin – I decided to include this one because October is the month for two very big things: Breast Cancer and Domestic Abuse. My Great Aunt Shirley is a survivor of breast cancer and my sister is a survivor of domestic abuse. So it has a double meaning for me!
  • Ophelia Pumpkin – I actually got the idea to do this after seeing it in the magazine Country Living and I guess I loved the idea so much that I ended up just doing it!
  • The Punk-y Pumpkin – This one is an older post, when we didn’t have anything for our crafts yet. However we made do with a least used nail polish and a tub of silver glitter!

I am sorry that these are the only ideas I have on my blog, I actually have more but they don’t have any good photos and I’m pretty sure my writing in general is down right awful so if you want to check the rest out, go to my search box on the top right and put in “pumpkins” and it should give you all of the posts, plus a few other Halloween inspired crafts too!

Hope you have enjoyed this post!

DIY: Painting Pumpkins!

banner

Howdy!

I actually have a new Halloween/pumpkin craft for you! I am so excited! So I guess I should explain why I didn’t think I’d ever do a craft again and how exactly we got these pumpkins.

My poor nana and I, we really loved doing our crafts, and we got in such a system to do them every September so the posts I’d write of them would go up sometime later that month or early October. They were basically everybody’s favorite thing to read during those two months and I always had a lot of writing them up, while trying to remember what all we did, spills and all! So when she went to the hospital and eventually went to stay at the nursing home, I kind of didn’t want to admit it but I knew my days of doing our Halloween or any crafts weren’t going to happen as much.

I have a creative soul and I’ve been hating the fact that I’ve had to basically shut down those desires and saying that makes me laugh because I hated painting in school. I’ve had these urges to purchase some paints since the end of August because it would be that time of the year where we’d be getting ready and so I’ve been really sad. My mom doesn’t carry the craft bug and you all should know about my dad by now! I also didn’t want to ask Blondie and Brandon because I didn’t know if they really wanted to do anything like that or had the time to do it. So I’m just kind of left to do nothing and it really sucks!

And then one evening my mom came into my bedroom, I had thought she had went to bed about a half hour before so it freaked me out at first. She came in to tell me that we’ll have to get me some paints because dad found some pumpkins out in the field and I was instantly happy! He literally brought home like seven of these large pumpkins and they sat on our porch for like a week or so, and then one morning my mom came in again and she said that Blondie and Brandon were coming over to paint the pumpkins. According to mom, it wasn’t even Blondie’s idea, it was Brandon’s! Poor guy had to work that day but he still wanted to paint pumpkins afterwards!

What you will need for this:

  • Pumpkins
  • Old newspapers
  • Paper plates
  • Toilet Paper Roll
  • Water Bowl
  • Paints
  • Brushes
  • aaand some ideas ahead of time!

We started out doing this outside because that would have been a smart choice or so we thought! I have to say, it wasn’t too bad sitting outside on the porch but the bugs were driving us nuts throughout the time we were out there. Poor Blondie was covered in mosquito bites, mostly on her right side – she had a total of 12 bites!

Now when I do this with my nana I am usually sitting in my wheelchair and use a chair or box to prop the pumpkin up to a certain level so I can reach it on all sides. Well, I didn’t have any of those for this so mom just had Brandon put me on the ground and I will admit it had been a while since I did that because it is so difficult to get me back up since I am so low. However, it did make things a lot easier for me but I definitely forgot about my legs and feet falling asleep every ten minutes! So I had some issues with gripping my brushes and figuring out how to sit again.

If anybody noticed the last bullet, the three of us were having a tough time figuring out ideas to paint our pumpkins. The only idea that I knew I really wanted to do was a minion. I am obsessed with these characters and yet, I have not seen them on a movie! I like to think of them of little Twinkies! So I had a rough idea on how to make one, I also had references considering I was still in my pajama bottoms with them on it. This time, I knew I had them on and didn’t do what I did with Brandon’s Christmas gift bag last year! Over the years of doing these crafts, I’ve learned to relax and not be such a perfectionist while working on these different characters. Poor Blondie hasn’t mastered that and was really giving herself a tough time with her sugar skull. I think it looked awesome but of course she was growing to hate it as she was finishing it. I’m glad I’m no longer like that anymore!

It had actually become a sort of game for both Blondie and Brandon because they definitely didn’t have any ideas to do for their pumpkins so they went on Pinterest and that’s where Blondie found hers. I still don’t know if Brandon used Pinterest but we were having the most difficult time guessing what his could be. He was not telling anyone and it even started to bother dad after he got up and looked at all three of us and our big mess! He finally had to tell us or maybe Blondie actually guessed it? I don’t remember how it came about, but I did catch a glimpse of it on his phone when he went inside for something but I will admit I had no idea what the hell he was making, all he said was it was a DC character and it wasn’t The Flash. Dad kept saying it was either Ant-Man or Iron Man, but we were all stumped. It is Red Hood, all he gave us as a hint was that he was once a Robin.

After we had finished our first pumpkins, we were thinking of stopping altogether but Brandon wanted to continue. He cracks me up sometimes! So dad made the suggestion of moving our stuff into the kitchen. So we packed up everything and moved into the center of our kitchen, the cats were confused because we were at the door but not paying attention to them. They actually never came up to the front porch to investigate, which was probably good or else some would have ended up with different colored paws and we would have little paw prints up and down the porch! As cute that would have been, they wouldn’t let us clean their little toes!

Anyways, we got started on our second batch of pumpkins. What was different for me in this round was that I had two ideas but only memories of what they looked like on Pinterest. I didn’t make any real reference like I had for my minions, so I just had to wing it and this was where I like not being a perfectionist. I decided to do a Jack Skellington from The Nightmare Before Christmas and I have to say, I did a fairly good job on it. I was very proud! I also put the word “Boo” on the back of it in a baby blue because I kept seeing it in the corner of my eye and I thought, what the hell? This one will hopefully go to my Aunt Cindy soon, if we don’t get any more rain beforehand!

Blondie made a very cute Nemo from Finding Nemo and it is genuinely the cutest thing, I kind of like it more than her sugar skull and you guys know how much I like my skulls! Poor Brandon though, he tried doing the Greek lettering of his fraternity but couldn’t get it to turn out right so he ended up covering it up with an old school American flag. You have to give the boy some props for trying it out though!

After a good two or three hours in two different spots, we were finally done! Well, technically there’s still one naked pumpkin left but it’s sort of big so nobody may paint him. Blondie and Brandon took pictures with their pumpkins and when she came back inside with my minion to take mine, I realized I forgot to paint a mouth on my minion so Brandon being a good boy, he took two brushes of black and white and made him a cute little mouth for me!

What are some of your favorite ways to decorate a pumpkin? Do you carve it, paint, or use sharpies?
