Still Coloring Easter Eggs!

When I wrote this post, for some odd reason I got confused and thought Easter was this coming Sunday. Thankfully, I caught my mistake early enough that I could change it beforehand!

Easter is no longer like a celebrated holiday in my household, mostly because my sister and I are grown up, she lives in her own apartment with her own fur babies and yeah, I’m just here. However, I do love being surprised with different candies, or like that one year, my mom just went and bought me a whole Easter basket that the three of us devoured in like a week and a half later! So the moral of the story is, we don’t usually do the normal things you do for the actual day like some families.

Every once in a while though, my mom and I get a hankering for hard boiled eggs (only a week after I publish my “veganism” post I write about this – sorry!) Easter is the one day of the year that having two cartons of fairly large decorated eggs is essential. She asked me two Sunday’s ago if nana and I would be interested in painting some eggs and since we’ve both had other projects going on, I just had her ask nana if she wanted to do it too. She agreed to do them as long as mom bought us some new dyes and hard boiled the eggs for us because she can’t, of course!

This isn’t going to be my regular DIY post either considering we didn’t make our own dyes!

I believe we had fun though! It was definitely easier putting them into each bowl of colors – which were pink, blue, yellow, orange and green. Towards the end though, my nana wanted to experiment and poured about half of the blue and yellow into an extra bowl we had in a drawer and so we had another darker shade of green to use, unfortunately at the time we had created this color we were running out of eggs! So we only got to decorate one egg in that color. It was a pretty though! My mom also forgot to only use water in the pink dye as that’s what the directions she had read only five seconds before pouring the vinegar into the bowl. The hue was a nice light color though, almost looks like maid-of-honor dress!

Getting the eggs out of the bowls that my mom filled up basically to the top was difficult. I was the one putting them in until we realized that my feet were turning blue and green very quickly! So I gave the reins to nana, who could use both of her hands to lift them out safely! We were putting them into a small pan with a paper towel on top so they would be dry before laying them back into the cartons, but towards the end I just didn’t care that my toes were changing colors, despite having a shower the night before, I just started pulling them out and back into the carton.

I don’t think there is a real age where you should stop coloring Easter eggs! I find it cute when nursing homes have their residents do it. They could relive their memories of doing it with their families too! I think my nana got a real thrill for it even though we were both hoping (and praying) to God that nobody fell on the floor and cracked! Speaking about the two of us and the eggs!

Do you still color Easter eggs? Why or why don’t you?

Birthday Bash | Part 1

So last week was my birthday and the celebration was divided into two days: the actual day of my birth and the following weekend. The reason why we did that is because if I don’t hang out with all of my family, it’s just weird! Even while my sister was gone for 2 hours to collegea a couple of years ago, we went up there to visit for my birthday as a surprise! We have lunch at Steak n Shake, and walk around the campus for a little bit. Blondie might be closer to home nowadays, but between she and Brandon, they both work and have classes during the week so we had to resort in waiting for the weekend to hang out with them.

Besides, I wanted to spend my actual birthday with my nana and the main reason was because since papaw has been gone, holidays and even birthdays are not the same anymore. I know my papaw was around though, because I woke up super early that morning with the story of the fact he never got to finish his Red Lobster meal for two days, because I decided to come early! It was something he would tell me every year, that he never got to eat all of his meal. Sorry papaw!

Despite the fact that it was my day, I originally wanted to keep everything a surprise from my nana, wanted her to have that look on her face of us coming into her house celebrating my birthday like we used to, but in order to make sure somebody baked me a cake, we had to tell her. She told me that she’s still surprised because I had kept that secret for like three months but she understood that making sure there was a cake or in this case cupcakes, was there that I had to spoil the surprise. After telling her, I started making another banner like the candy corn banner we made for Halloween. I made a “Happy” with a selection of dark colors and “Birthday” had the more vintage colors. We even found a green that matched the living room carpet in her house!!

I am a cupcake fan, I think I’ve always been more on the side of cupcakes because I don’t like a big slice of cake as everybody else. I’m also not a big fan of frosting either! I think I’d rather have a naked cake instead! One of these days, I’ll figure out how to make those cake pops because I feel like they’d be more up my alley than anything else! Sorry to continue down this slope, I don’t necessarily like chocolate cake anymore either! This was the one year that I got to have a vanilla cake because half the time it was divided up between my family and my nana and papaw! My papaw was more about ice cream and cookies than he ever was about cake in general though! Well, besides the occasional apple pie at Thanksgiving – that could only be served with chocolate ice cream!

Anyways, she had my mom buy her some skull paper liners for the muffin tins but she’s also used the aluminum foil liners and something about that or the temperature in the kitchen and they became very dough-y after baking! They still looked like cupcakes though, they just looked tough because of the spiders and sugar skulls on the sides of the liners! She baked them the day before my birthday as I wanted to help decorate them. So we colored them with greens, blues, and orange with the white frosting but I wanted to try something that I had seen on TV quite a few times.

I’ve seen where if you don’t have a piping bag you can use a ziplock baggy by snipping off  the sides and just pulling the frosting through the one side that has a decorative tip (I originally had one, but it got lost in the bag!) and just to see what that does. I think it would have worked better for me if I could have seen what I was doing! Since I was using my right foot is my guide, I couldn’t see around it so I was literally checking every five seconds to see if I was even hitting the cupcake at all! We didn’t put a lot of icing into the baggy so I could cover three cupcakes and majority of the frosting went on the bottom of my foot! I think with more practice and maybe switching the feet around, I could do it better!

After that, we just hung out for a bit… looking over some of our family history and talked too much about a secret project. No, I won’t tell you and no, it has nothing to do with my blog or anything for Disability Horizons! 😉 So that’s all I can share about day one of festivities! I’ll have a second post up not next week, but the week after! Next week is already booked up enough as it is!

An Early Birthday Celebration!

This post might be super long because I’m talking about two very long days. So get ready!

Two weeks ago, I spent some quality time with my family. There was a real reason why almost everybody came down. My nana was supposed to have an operation but she ended up not having it, however several family members still came down that weekend anyways. After sleeping at my grandparent’s house over the summer, I actually wanted to do it again. Sometimes it’s great to get away from my room, parents etc and sleep somewhere else. I felt bad that my younger cousin Taylor would have to sleep on the floor and help out again, but he seemed to be okay with it though.

I went over to my nana’s Friday morning as my parent’s went somewhere, I don’t even remember where. It was great to have that hour with my grandparents alone before the whole house got crowded. Back in July, my nana and I made our first cake together. The whole thing was really about learning measurements and seeing if I could stir the batter in the bowl with my foot and I can! So after maybe twenty minutes of being there, I saw the cake icing and pan and I thought we were going to bake another one! When she told me she had already baked it, I was a little sad but then she kind of explained her reasons to bake the cake in general.

Every year, well now that I’ve been celebrating my birthdays either at home or some place else. My poor grandparents don’t get to help celebrate our birthdays anymore. So she figured we could celebrate it early and with Laurie, Mike, and Uncle Rick! I was okay with this (of course!) but I was still bummed she made it without me! However, she has this new attachment that she hadn’t used yet. She got it I think sometime during the spring. It is kind of like a pastry bag, I’ve never used one of those before, we were kind of curious if I could use it with my feet.. It has a pump in between the area where you pour the icing into and when you go to push it forward and lift up or to the side and it creates a very cool design. We used two decorative dispensers, the rose and I don’t remember the other one. I was in my push wheelchair and I hadn’t done anything like this before so I wasn’t expecting it to be as difficult as it was! Apparently getting both of my feet to work as a team isn’t such a good idea! It was fun though! The decorations don’t look too horrible. I think it looks like meringue. I did the white and blue peaks. My Aunt Laurie wrote out “Happy Birthday Meghan” on it since I barely got through writing out “M-E” I’ll try it out again soon!

This time around I actually didn’t have my iPod, Kindle, laptop or UNO cards because I managed to lose them in one month. I was a little bit bored to say the least, but decorating the cake kept me occupied a little. I went to sleep or tried to around maybe 9pm, I’m just estimating that because my nana doesn’t have a clock near where I was on the couch. This time I bought my own blanket and pillow. The blanket part was genius, the pillow not so much. Mine is apparently too flat and it was so uncomfortable for my neck. I actually didn’t get much sleep that night but it wasn’t because of my paranoia, it was because my Uncle Mike kept snoring. At my house, my dad is the one who snores and even though our walls are pretty thin, there’s still a wall keeping those rooms separate. In other words, with the right fan or having a TV on you can’t hardly hear him. It was WAY too quiet in that living room even after he got up to go to the bathroom. I got up at 8am and I was so exhausted! The only person who slept in was Taylor. Lucky little boy!

My nana got up and made rolls: cinnamon and orange rolls. I actually had an orange roll, it was sooo good! I had been dreaming of them for the past couple of weeks so this was worth it! I still can’t believe Laurie converted me because I LOVE my cinnamon rolls. My Uncle Rick was to come down at noon so we got food from the store in town, chicken and mashed potatoes. I had chicken and broccoli and celery to eat. Doesn’t sound very good, but I certainly loved it! My papaw had the TV on a local channel that had a soccer game on it. I haven’t watched a soccer game since 2013 when Blondie played during her senior year. I don’t know anything about it, she tried to explain it to us when she played but I think it went over my head like every other sport usually does to me. However, I was actually into it. The teams were Watland (totally butchered the name up, sorry!) against Arsenal. I have to say Aaron Ramsay is freaking cute! Now, don’t think that because I thought he was cute was the reason why I was so into it. I mean, it was one of the reasons but 3 days later I finally found out who won it. We didn’t see the ending of the game because Laurie and Mike took Taylor and I to Wal-Mart. Uncle Rick stayed behind to help my nana with her new laptop, poor guy!

When we came back we worked on this little Halloween DIY project. I thought my nana would be more into it but they were still working on it. After we were finished, I used the reminder of the foam board to take pictures of the nail polishes I got at Wal-Mart. That post went up last week if you missed it! My mom, Blondie and Batman had to work over the weekend. Myy mom said they would be over at 6pm. I was extremely tired and a bit overwhelmed so I decided to lay down on the floor for a bit. That was actually more comforting than I thought! I actually spent less time on the floor and when my mom came over, she put me back in the wheelchair and I guess I was too close to my nana’s cart because when she went to lift me up off the floor I bumped the side of my head in the process and then we started laughing. Bad, bad idea!

I actually had plans to stay another night, but whenever my mom found out that Laurie was leaving around noon the next day, she and I decided I needed to go home that evening. Honestly I was perfectly okay with this. I needed to sleep in my own bed with my fan again. I had a lot of fun though!! Laurie said they might be back for Christmas instead of Thanksgiving this year. That’s okay because I think my mom might be working that holiday so we might be celebrating on Black Friday like we did last year!
