March Playlist

Hello!

Welcome back to another monthly playlist! I hope you are doing good, and finding your isolation comforting and possibly a little fun here and there.

I started this month on the right foot, as for the last four years, March has become more of a sadder time for my family and I since my papaw’s death. I try not to bring it into my playlist but it’s like my brain likes to have softer sounds around. The first week was nothing but Ingrid Michaelson, Plumb and a little of Dido mixed in there too. If you were to see the collection of songs I put into my Spotify playlist, the first four songs are all in gray/white so I’ve been secretly calling it the “gray” playlist.

Towards the middle of the month though, I found upbeat tunes and wanted to listen to some of my favorite albums, ones that I knew I liked all the way through and this brought me back into my rock phase for a little bit. I listened Halestorm, Icon For Hire, and Within Temptation. I also realized I still had a three hours worth of old school hip hop music videos I could be watching on my DVR, and I started adding some of my favorite tracks like “I Do!” by Toya, “Right Thurr” (Remix) by Chringy featuring Trina and Jeremaine Dupri, and “Snap Yo Fingers” by Youngbloodz featuring Lil Jon, Sean Paul, & E-40.

How about I just give you my Top 20 songs instead of talking about the process? It might be less boring for you too!

Open Hands by Ingrid Michaelson featuring Trent Dabbs
Chocolate & Ice Cream by Plumb
I Choose You by Sara Bareilles
You Will Become by Glen Hansard
Fire Breather by Laurel
Beautiful With You by Halestorm
Don’t Think I’m Not by Kandi
Queen by Loren Gray
Good In Goodbye by Madison Beer
Say So by Doja Cat
Baby, I’m Back by Baby Bash featuring Akon
A Mili by Lil Wayne
Carry On by Ashanti
AM To PM by Christina Milian
Imagine by Ariana Grande
Our Last Gloomy Dance by Diabulus in Musica
All Is Found by Evan Rachel Wood
Zipper by Jason Derulo
Sluil a Run by Ella Roberts
Nobody Wants To Be Alone by Christian Reindl featuring Atrel

I hardly ever play favorites when it comes to my own playlists–especially the monthly ones, but this one just feels different compared to the others. It’s calmer but you can sense the shift on where I was emotionally; for example I associate the month of March with my papaw of course, March Madness, and listening to lots of Celtic Woman. I have my mom to thank for that because a couple of weeks before my papaw died, she found PBS was airing the newest Celtic Woman concert (Destiny) and hearing them sing always gives me a sense of peace.

This month I was allowed to watch some of my favorite Disney movies, but honestly I just wanted to watch Frozen II on Disney+ and now that I have, I am sort of taking advantage of the opportunity and watching classics like Bambi, Alice In Wonderland and even the newest live action film: Aladdin. By the time, this post goes live I’d probably watched the rest! Back to Frozen though, I absolutely loved it! The wait was so worth it, and yes. I am as obsessed with the soundtrack like I am with the first one. I have already learned both “All Is Found” and “Show Yourself” like a pro! I did not know that Evan Rachel Wood could sing so good!

If you would like to check out my Spotify playlist, click here and you’ll hopefully be directed back to my profile. If not, please let me know so it can be corrected!

What are you listening to this month?

Dear Papaw IV

Dear Papaw,

It is me again.

I decided to do this letter while I sat on the edge of my bed staring at my fairy lights hanging down around the only window in the room while listening to sad love songs. They’re bright like your spunk, and I miss it dearly. I’ve been looking for an endless supply of laugher as it has become the best form of medicine for me lately. I am also finally understanding why you liked to sit in the quiet. It’s hauntingly peaceful.

Lots have happened since I wrote to you last, and I’m sure you know everything. The new house. Dad’s watching basketball again. He watched majority of this season, going between Butler and IU. There were a few times that we both agreed you would be furious about, especially since each team had a good start but once the conference games began all heck broke loose. And then to top it off, the Coronavirius outbreak. We were furious but yet not surprised by the cancellation of all games–men and women! They even cancelled my NBA games! Last Thursday, we had a Butler game (which is how I found out about the NCAA announcement) earlier in the day and then I was suppose to have both Rockets and Lakers games. I hadn’t watched a game for about five days and the one time I was ready, this happens!

Emily has graduated and hoping to start her journey to get her master’s degree. And you were probably apart of the journey with Brittany to visit nana and everybody up north last fall. Thank goodness I did not throw up in her car! She probably wouldn’t let me back in that car again… I’m hoping you’ll be part of the mini adventure coming up too. No pressure or anything, because you know how loud we can get sometimes!

You would love to hang out with Nolan. He is fun but has a lot more energy than anybody else! He is interested in cars and trucks. We haven’t exactly introduced trains to me yet. He has his own sound effects that are absolutely adorable! He can say several words, I think the last count was over 40! Apparently trying to say “Meggie” or just plain Meghan is a little harder to do, but I am a naturally patient person so I will wait for the day he comes out of his mouth and when that day comes, I’ll probably cry right in front of him!

Another thing he loves is music. I don’t know whether or not you’d be proud of an almost two year old knowing all of the words to “Cool” by Jonas Brothers. I mean, they’re no Stan Kenton, but he does sound cute whenever he does the chorus. Oh, and the dancing too! He definitely has some rhythm in his bones, even if they like hurt every other day. I think you’d wonder why he has pains like an elderly person (this was as good as you’re going to get. I mean, I could have said someone in their 80’s, but I think nana would feel offended!) but also still feel bad for him. He’ll be the only one in his age group, who will know every time the weather changes.

Okay, I think I am done ranting about things. Although, I think you like hearing how things are going lately. If I can remember, maybe I’ll write to you again on your birthday. We’ll have to see how everything goes first. I wonder if you’ve become a patient person. It seems a bit weird saying that out loud, but I am a little curious.

I hope you’re doing very well wherever you are right now. Keep watching over everybody if you can. We love and miss you lots. Bye.

Your granddaughter,

Meg-han.

A-Z Disability Challenge | L : Life Lately

Hello!

It has been a while since my last post. Thankfully we are at the letter “L” on my A-Z Disability Challenge because instead of doing what I had planned I am going to change it to a Life Lately post. I hope you are all good right now so let’s get into this!

As you may know back in June, I talked about the fact that both July and August were fast approaching and I had begin to worry about how I would respond to them since I went through a huge depression spell last year and was basically miserable. I felt like I really needed to keep myself busy with blogging, in hopes that my brain wouldn’t be reminded of that time. I had lots of cool topics I was talking about on here and then one day I just got really bored and decided that I didn’t want to write anything. I just wanted to enjoy myself for a few days–which slowly turned into weeks–and I think I realized how happy I have become lately!

Since we’ve moved into this house I have been getting out of my room a LOT compared to the other house. It was a pretty small home with tiny hallways and caved-in floors. When I officially moved in at the beginning of January, I just thought I would continue my routine of staying in my room majority of the time, but my mom had other plans. She was given this nice kitchen table and wanted all of us to use it, but I thought we would only use it for holidays, so the fact we actually sit together and enjoy our meals as one, is pretty surreal!

One of the things that I have really enjoyed is when my mom is home from work. She’ll put me in my wheelchair and let me have breakfast or lunch at the table. If she has to cook or has something else going on while I’m in there with her, I’m usually looking out the back patio doors and counting our cats. I’ve figured out that both Tavis and Felix are the ones who are out there the most in the mornings. However, if nobody is there I try to find ChiChi on the couch. She likes to cover herself with many blankets and try to get some extra Zzz’s but sometimes when I see her peeking through the blankets, I can’t help myself I like to boop her on the nose and if she gets out of her little cave, I crunch down to attempt to get a kiss, trying not to hurt myself in the process, but even if that happens I will still do it because I like getting kisses from the animals.

I like to stay in my chair for as long as possible and even keep my mom company if dad is still in bed. We have some great chats and there are times where she’ll put me to work, and I’ll mop the floors or break up boxes to put them in the trash. I can be very handy at times, just let me pour pasta inside a bowl, apparently I have lost my touch.

She likes to read Closer Weekly magazines, and honestly I enjoy some of their articles too, but in the back of it they have an entertainment inspired Word Search you can complete, and I absolutely love working on these puzzles! My papaw loved Crosswords but I always found them to be a little difficult – to be perfectly honest he also had issues as well especially if they were about a lot of the recent pop culture stuff. It was interesting because there were times where he would ask my mom or us kids if we knew what the answer was; unfortunately there was hardly ever one I knew on the spot! So, that’s why Word Searches are my thing, but they weren’t always though, I have had trouble finding the ones going vertical or backwards in the past, but I have gotten better at them now!

I have found out that I am at the perfect height to reach my foam box while I’m sitting in my push chair. At the beginning of the summer, I went back to coloring again. Before my nana moved away she gave me these crayons that you can twist to keep them sharp, everytime I use one I immediately think “where were these things when I was in school?!” They’re very handy! After two days, I grew out of that because I tend to grip them too hard, I was literally causing my toes pain as I continued so that sucked!

After Nolan had his birthday party in June, he was given a lot of new toys, and there were so much that we were given a chunk of them to keep in his room. He has a new love of Hot Wheels now so I am even more happy that I purchased that city rug for him, because he can really put it to good use with these little cars! What is funny though is that Brandon and I, we were perfectly fine without it. They move better on the wood floors and since there is so much space in the living room, they can go pretty far; Nolan gets a big kick of it. Every time I ask for a car, he’ll give me one and put it in between my toes so he loves it whenever I play with them too!

One day I got the idea about playing with these little cars in his room. At least, that was my original plan, but I ended up changing my mind when I figured I could play basketball instead. They also left this large bag of these brightly colored plastic balls, and since he has like two baskets I thought this would be kind of cool, and I was right! I love being active and the fact that I am using both of my legs to do this makes me happy and I enjoy having fun with playing again, it has become a blessing in disguise. I wasn’t doing too good at throwing them in the basket at first, but I am slowly getting better at it as time goes on! Practice makes perfect.

I am still trying to get Nolan into basketball. So, I am plainly trying to get better at my shots so that maybe it’ll inspire him to play along with me! He does know how to dunk because he has a basket at his house that he pushes a basketball, soccer, and whatever stuffed animal is nearby into it. At least he gets the idea so that’s a plus! Maybe when he comes over on Christmas, he can watch an NBA game with me? It’ll only happen if I can get him to crawl (or walk as he is trying to do it!) into my room without anybody knowing he’s gone. I doubt that’ll happen as Blondie and papaw freaks out about everything he does!

What helps you relax or get you out of a funk? Have you learned anything new about yourself or a hobby this summer?

What I Truly Feel About The NBA Trades

Howdy!

So, like every other person who watches NBA basketball, I have been really interested in the trading season, Well I take that back, I’m only interested in where or if my favorites stay on their original teams. That’s all I really cared about in the beginning, but once Free Agency kicked off I just started feeling like I was on Bleacher Report a lot more during the afternoon!

The main reason why I wanted to write this post was because I don’t have anyone that likes to watch professional basketball. My poor mom has to listen to me complain about the NBA all of the time, but when it comes to this, it basically goes over her head. If you are like me and without anyone to talk to about these trades, please leave a comment below!

The LAL/NOP Trade

At the beginning of the month we had the Anthony Davis trade, he made his decision rather quickly but considering he initially wanted to leave back in March, I think it’s fair to say he knew that if he was asked to join the Los Angeles Lakers, he would do it. What I didn’t expect was the six player trade off to New Orleans Pelicans for him alone.

When the announcement was made about Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, and Josh Hart going to the Pelicans, I was both pissed and sad at the same time! And on top of that, my immediate thought was, well what’s going to happen to Kyle Kuzma? Are they going to keep him or not? Honestly, I kind of wish he was part of the second round to go to Nola and I know that’s really selfish to say but I really don’t want to watch the Lakers for just one person. I did that after Brook Lopez went to the Milwaukee Bucks last season, and even though I enjoyed watching them I would rather watch a whole team that I loved, like with the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets. We will have to see what I end doing once the season actually starts.

What really concerned me was that later that week, there was a rumor that the Houston Rockets were considering giving away Clint Capela, Eric Gordon, and PJ Tucker for Kawhi Leonard. I will be honest with you; I almost shit myself when I saw that! I think it would be a big mistake letting go of Capela since he and James are like psychic because they each know where the other one is on the court at all times!

As for Ball, Ingram, and Hart, I will be watching the Pelicans because they are my favorites. I also heard that JJ Reddick will be joining them too, but I’m having trouble figuring out if that is true, but I am okay with this although I think he was one of the best players on the Sixers team. They seem to have a great team altogether so it’ll be interesting to see what happens in the 2019-20!

Kyrie Irving & Kevin Durant Going To The Nets!

I don’t know what was more surprising the fact that Kevin Durant left Golden State Warriors or that Kyrie Irving was going to the Brooklyn Nets? I think both decisions freaked out a lot of people, but honestly there were signs that both would be leaving their respected teams earlier in the season though. However, after everybody found out that they were each going to New York, it was like the Lakers, Clippers were fighting for the best to become that super team.

These two were not the only players from those teams to leave either. André Iguodala and Al Halford both moved on to Grizzlies and Philly. I am looking forward to seeing Al in a Philly jersey, however I would have liked him to stay in Boston even without Kyrie because the Celtics are a big favorite of mine, and I think Al has a that veteran vibe that could be useful for Jayson Tatum and the incoming rookies too. Honestly, Celtics let go of good players such as Terry Rozier, Marcus Morris, and Aron Baynes that has really hit me hard lately!

Kawhi Leonard Leaving The Raptors For The Clippers

Do you remember when I said that Lakers and Clippers are biting to be the best team on the West Coast basically? I think it all solidified when Kawhi agreed to the Los Angeles Clippers. There were rumors that LeBron was trying to talk him into coming to the Lakers too. I guess Clippers had the better deal!

I think out of everyone, he was the one who kept people on their toes on where exactly he would go next. A lot prayed that he would stay with the Raptors for at least one more year, especially after he helped them achieve a NBA Championship! I also thought he’d stay with them too, but maybe he thought he needed to move on and see what he could contribute to another team like the Clippers.

I think I am finished with this post. These were the ones that really struck a cord with me. At the time I wrote and schedule this, there will probably be more that’ll make me either really happy or mad because that’s how it goes with professional basketball!

Are you a fan of the NBA? Why or why not? Have you been happy with the recent trades? Please let me know because I would like to know what you think of what has happened lately!

Dear Papaw III

Dear Papaw,

Tomorrow marks three years you’ve been gone. It may have been years, but it honestly still feels like yesterday. The whole week before and the days that came after play on a loop in my head. Originally, I had a totally different way about how I wanted this letter to go, but I’ve never wanted these to be too snappy. You wouldn’t have liked that anyways. I miss you a lot, even if some people don’t think I do. I think of you whenever I watch basketball, and I often wonder what you’d think of my knowledge about it and the four professional teams I watch on a daily basis. I think you’d be like dad and hate on the Lakers because of LeBron. I don’t blame you. I don’t care for him being on the team either. I wonder if you’d like the Rockets though since they’re the ones I seem to watch and root for the most of course! I understand why you didn’t like it because of how many attempts a player will take to shoot the ball and the whole scoring process, I’m still not understanding that part yet, but I’m slowly getting there.

On the day I wrote this letter, I went looking for a picture for the banner. I was going to attempt to find one of “Alex” with your old Butler shirt but then I found an album that nana made for us in the family to share memories and old photos, and I found one dedicated to you. I had array of pictures to choose from, but once I saw this one, I knew I had to use it. You’re wearing a Butler shirt and if you’ve been watching them from heaven, you know they’re in a desperate need of a miracle, getting through the Big East tournament and March Madness, which will all probably be over with by the time this post goes out, but you know!

I always thought it was funny how Rick would continue to buy you a Butler shirt for your birthday or Christmas and you’d wear it once maybe and then stuff it back in the closet. You were pretty consistent with your fashion in your old age. We all thought you looked adorable in anything you wore, even if you had food spills down your shirt and pants, we didn’t care. We laughed at you, and apparently you’ve been getting back at us for doing so, because we all tend to spill our food on our shirts a lot more than we usually do.

We are all in agreement that you visit little Nolan. Em posted a video of him reaching up to an invisible spirit; it gave me goosebumps! He is so smart! He actually reminds me of you in the fact that you wouldn’t really flaunt your smarts, sorry, I couldn’t think of a better word there! I think you would have loved him dearly. Now, if you can talk ChiChi into letting him pet her easier, that would be nice. He is so curious about his surroundings, and ChiChi is the only animal that is afraid of him. Honestly, if you saw him in his walker or “car” as we call it, you’d be terrified too! The best way to compare the experience is a four year old me racing around the house in my wheelchair!

Hope you are enjoying yourself wherever you are, and watch over all of us down here too, not just the youngsters. We’re still a quirky bunch but we all need an angel at our side sometimes. Although, I feel like you’d be like a bit of a jokester still, so be good too. You don’t want to get on God’s bad side! So no pranks with some of your friends up there. You told me way too many stories of you growing up with them to know that you all can get into some mischief. Anyways, I love you.

Your granddaughter,
Meg-han.
