Things I Learned From The Movies!

Today’s post was inspired by the trending hashtag: #ThingsILearnedFromTheMovies on Twitter that appeared back in January! Once I saw it, I look into the answers people were tweeting and after finding some clever and very hilarious answers, I ultimately decided to turn it into a blog post!

Movies are my favorite pastime.

I’d rather watch a movie early in the morning than late at night. It’s also a great time of day to work on blog posts too! I think maybe it has something to do with the fact that I’m more relaxed and/or in a good mood around that time of day.  Everybody is generally still asleep, so I know I can’t have my TV up too loud. If I were to watch a scary movie, I could potentially scream or if I watched a comedy, I’d be laughing my butt off so I’ve learned to only watch drama or action flicks!

I’ve learned that movies only show you things that you need to know, and I feel the 1985 classic Back To The Future is the greatest example I can give you! Dr. Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd) is a scientist that has built himself a time machine with a DeLorean alongside a stolen crate full of plutonium. He shows it to his friend, Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and they record their first attempt to send somebody to the future: enter Einstein the dog! After the Libyans come to slay Doc for tricking them, Marty tries to dodge them by going into the car and it takes him back into November 5, 1955!

You really need to pay attention to every scene of this movie, because everything ties in together! When Marty walks into Doc’s home in the very beginning. He realizes the mess on the floor of the dog food piled up in the bowl, and he puts down his skateboard and he pushes it back with his heel and it hits the yellow case of plutonium. This is your first introduction to something a little fishy!

To the scene where his sister tells him that Jennifer Parker has called him and his mother and sister have a conversation about which way is the right way to meet a guy, and you start to hear the story of how both Lorraine and George met and when Marty goes back in time and sees the younger versions of his parents, he changes the story he’s heard all of his life!

And then finally when Marty is about to use the lightning storm to his advantage to go back home, he writes a letter to the younger Doc about what is to occur on the date that he sends Marty back to, so that he can at least prepare himself but unfortunately Doc discovers the note and rips it up. However, you can see him putting the pieces directly back in his pockets of his jacket for a split second when the tree branch falls down, so that basically tells you that later he finds the letters and puts them back together and when Marty watches his friend get shot again in the future, Doc suddenly awakes and sits up to show Marty the bullet proof vest hidden underneath his white suit.

However sometimes movies like to keep their audiences guessing! For example 2016’s Arrival with Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. The story starts off with Amy’s character Louise, who is a linguist, divorcee and sadly her daughter Hannah has just died from an illness. In the beginning, it shows the fact that Louise cherished and obviously misses her daughter very much.

And then these space ships appear all over the world and she is given access to help figure out why they are there so she is given a team with Renner’s character Ian, who is a physicist and they embark on the upper level on one of these ships to try to communicate with them. They try a number of symbols and codes to see if the aliens understand them. Gradually, the relationship between both Ian and Louise grows and as they continue to study the two aliens that they ultimately name “Abbott” and “Costello” they finally figure out their language or symbols.

When asked about why they were there, they answered “offer weapon” but another research team in China mistakes it as “use weapon” and they want to take down the aliens and their ships for good. Louise doesn’t want to stop, she wants to learn more about the answer she was given and they try to explain to her that they are here to help humanity and they make Louise realize that the thoughts of Hannah and memories of her younger life and eventual death are not what they seem.

I learned that not every extraterrestrial inspired film has to be the same! We’re so used to watching the normal “world destroyer” type of movies, that we think that would be the best way to handle aliens if they ever showed up on the White House lawn! For the ones who enjoy the Star Trek TV show and movies, hope they are welcoming beings, who want to share their advance technologyThis film showed the theme of aliens and the word “weapon” in a different light. It wasn’t as jam-packed with action but it was very interesting on the fact that we’ve been taught to fear them of what they could do our world, but I think we think we’re causing enough destruction to ourselves that they don’t want to intervene.

What are some lessons you’ve learned from your favorite movies?

Movie Characters I’d Like To Meet

I was thinking about doing a post about what it feel like if I could meet movie or TV show characters that I really liked. I can blame this on the past post I did about which book characters I’d like to meet. So I’ve been really thinking about adding onto it. Movies is first, and according to the picture I’ve chosen to start this out, I’d like to meet Emmett “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) because they are awesome and have been through so many years it would be interesting to do a mini interview with them. Especially, since the first movie was made in the 80’s, so both could still be alive to see 2012.

In the second Back To The Future movie, they are in the year 2015, so that’s still a ways off from now, but I wonder if Doc ever went to the infamous year because you know a scientist would want to see if the world would end in December or not. I would be curious, so if he did do you think he sees what carmakers are thinking in their minds, when will we really get those flying cars? I’ve been watching the trilogy and The Jetsons since I was little, so the flying cars are first on my mind to wonder about. The technology keeps changing, right? What about the cars?

Anyways, another movie I’ve been thinking about to use is Life As We Know It and it starred Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel. It’s more of a chick flick than anything else, but it’s funny and cute at the same. I was having some trouble thinking of other movies to choose and this movie just came at me. I haven’t watched it in a while, maybe that’s why. Sorry off track, back to the plan. The movie is about two single people, who were set up by their married friends to go on a date, but it didn’t work out. Then a few years go by and the friends that are married, had a daughter, and they get into an accident and get killed. Well, the characters are now legal guardians of this little girl. They decide to live together in the house, and “try” to get along. That’s a cliffhanger for you. Thankfully, the way the movie ends, you are like me, you want to know more about the characters in the future. Are they still getting along? Are they married? Have they had kids of their own? You know little thoughts here and there.

I would love to meet the characters that Katherine and Josh play, they play Holly and Messer. If you’re familiar with the movie, I bet you’ve asked yourself the same questions. How has careers of these two worked out? Because you know Holly owned a bakery, Messer was a big-time technical sports director. Which one calls more of the shots at the house? The movie shows everybody celebrating Sophie’s second birthday, and Holly and Messer’s one year of getting through it all and staying alive. Everybody wonders, do they get married? Have any kids? Or maybe some were hoping for a sequel. Another movie that involves babies.

The Back-Up Plan is a movie about a woman named Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) and she doesn’t think finding a relationship is in her deck of cards, but she does want a child. So she gets artificial insemination. After that appointment, she tries to go into a taxi and she and this guy Stan (Alex O’Loughlin) get the same taxi. I don’t want to go into much detail, but I will say this. How many guys would date a girl, find out she was artificial insemination, gets pregnant, finds out she’s having twins and agree to make the relationship work? Eh, not many would. How the ending played out, the thoughts you had for LAWKI are coming back again in full swing. Because at the ending, not only do they become engaged, but the twins look about a year old, and Zoe throws up in the trash can right at the end. Two theories, she could be plain sick or she really is pregnant and this time it would be naturally. As far as the ending goes, it could be either one. Their faces at the end though were freaking hilarious!

Back To The Past

I love history, like a lot! Doesn’t really matter what era I like the most because I think all different kinds of history is very cool. Have you ever done this before, you get into a room with a bunch of people and think about this or that person and think about their life? I’ve done this a lot. I just want to see if their life is any worse or better than mine. My nana was telling me about this book she found about my papaw’s family history. Of course, she talks about this and I’m at the episode of The Vampire Diaries when Jeremy is looking at his great-great-great grandfathers (I’m sure it’s much further than that) journals, and doing this paper for history. So my mind goes, “oh cool!” In reality, I love family history because I love old times, especially the “old” stories that my papaw tells me, but the book she’s letting me read. It is from 1600s, and the aunts (which are my great aunts) started looking this up on their own. After two days of looking this book, so far my middle name and my mother’s name were the most popular names for women. The most weirdest name we’ve found was Sylvanus.

I have looking at this book and nana got out these pages that are handwritten by one of the aunts, and it’s about my papaw’s family and back. I’m very intrigued that my papaw’s family came from the Netherlands, and I’ve known my nana’s family comes from Germany. Well, her birth family is originally from there, she was born in Ohio and was placed in an orphanage when she was young. Her birth name was Ruth. When she was adopted they changed it to Dona (Donna) and she didn’t see any of her birth brothers and sisters until 1991 when they got together for a reunion. I don’t know my dad’s family history, but I do know I am half Native American, which when I was in Elementary, I thought it was very cool. It explained some things. One of these days, I will get to know more about my dad’s family history. I feel bad for anybody on my dad’s side who gets to let me read these things because I tend to get a little overboard, but I love it! My nana is getting a joy at hearing me pronounce these names and forcing some word to come out of my mouth.

Yesterday I was talking to my nana, well anytime my papaw says one of the aunts would love us or have a fit on what we were doing. They were apparently very proper. I think a lot of times of if they could ever understand that they had it good when they were younger up until their death. Seriously, my family now is a little crazy. They would have a hard time with us. Well some of us, probably two of us would either mind it all or wouldn’t give a shit in the world. I love those dreams of when my mind wonders about going back through time and seeing how my family use to look like and act. I told my nana and papaw yesterday about one of the dreams I had once. I dreamt of I was on the ground outside my grandparents house and I was scooting and wondering where my chair was, so I scooted on the hot sidewalk because I heard my mom laughing and I called her “mom” and she of course didn’t think nothing of it because she hadn’t had me yet. She was sitting on the ground and I went by her and said, “mom” again and she looked at me with this blank look on her face and I looked around and everybody’s looks were different from what they look like now.

These three ladies were sitting outside with my mom and Aunt Laurie, and they were very puzzled by it all. Hell, even I was confused. The next thing I remember about that dream was I was inside the house and it was so different. We were in living room and they were asking me questions about my family and asking about my hands. I remember not answering their first question. I felt like Marty McFly in the Back To The Future Part 1 where he was his mom’s house and having dinner with them. Same thing in this case. I had about ten people staring at me, probably trying to figure out why I look like my mom. The weirdest part was that I got to meet my cousins Amy and Chris when I were little, and Chris was already planting his sweet side to me. Next minute I knew I was awake and I was mad because I wanted to keep going on it. After that dream, I’ve had three others since then.
