Tune Tuesday | England ’17

16473130_1380936781970648_6328379310374140905_n

Hi 🙂

Now we’re in one of my favorite places! Have you ever felt homesick for a place you’ve never been? Well, I have and my heart belongs in England, mainly London! The music in this post is all over the place really, we have a lot of pop but in different ranges! All three artists have been featured on the Billboard Charts!

The first is Dido and I am REALLY hoping that I have not talked about her yet. My gut is telling me that I have either wanted to mention her or the possibly is this will be a repeat of an older post, who knows! I love Dido though! We tend to believe that this trend of chilled, dark, pop/alternative/indie music is new but it’s not and Dido should be the mother of it! After hearing her song “Thank You” and “White Flag” years ago, I have had this love of a somber vibe in music! She’s the reason why I’m obsessed with Banks! They have such similar sounds, it’s so good!

Second will probably shock you and/or make you remember the year 2004, whether or not that was a happy year for you is another thing altogether! Mis-Teeq is an all girl group consisting of Sabrina Washington, Alesha Dixon, and Su-Elise Nash. Does the song “Scandalous” ring any bells? It does for me, between my mom and I, we were obsessed with it. We tend to do that with girl groups for some odd reason! One movie that I love is Catwoman, I’m like the 1% of the population who loved it I guess! If I could find the soundtrack or score, I’d be a happy camper because they basically helped with it.

Last one is Dua Lipa, she’s our new artist! Of course, I did not think she was British until I looked her up and was amazed but was also very happy too because then I could include her with this year’s lineup since she’s been featuring practically everywhere! You might’ve saw her all over YouTube last year towards the summer, she was the featured artist on there! She’s recently released a new track with Miguel called “Lost In Your Light” but you might be more familiar on Martin Garrix newest single “Scared Of Being Lonely”. I’m still obsessed with this sucker!

So what do you think? I’m looking for more British music, so if you would like for me to talk about someone just let me know!

Favorite Childhood Books

18157056_10206973293810786_6218837737246760403_n

Hello!

Back in December, on the post about how to wrap Christmas presents, my nana and I ordered little JD some books. We found some very cheap set of books, she ordered a pack that could be categorized in the “baby” section whereas mine were based for toddlers I think!

I’ve talked about my issues of being a very difficult reader growing up, but I do remember some books of my childhood–granted I may have seen the movies a lot more–and I wanted to share some of my favorites! I grew up in the 90’s and was in grade school in early 2000’s so the amount of books that I read as a kid are sort of different compared to what the little ones read now. I don’t necessarily know why I suddenly wanted to discuss this, I just thought it was be fun and somewhat nostalgic too! While you read the list below, maybe you’ll remember some you used to read as a youngster and share what you liked in the comments!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

I have to point out that almost every children’s book on this list is a classic! I think this was always a cute and sweet book. Very easy to keep up with, if your child had trouble keeping up. I do remember becoming interested in butterflies after reading this book, caterpillars were another though! My sister and I only liked one worm in our whole lives and it was fuzzy and ombre before it was ever in style, sadly I don’t know what the exact name of the worm nor do I know if it actually changes into a butterfly – mom could never explain that question!

If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laure Joffe Numeroff

This was actually one of the books I think my cousin Kristi got for JD, all I remember was a mouse, but that’s about it! My memory of this one is a little fuzzy, but I liked the illustrations included in the book. They were nice bolder colors that weren’t too obnoxious. It seemed like a fun book!

The Rainbow Fish by Marcus Phister

If you were a child of the 80’s and/or 90’s then you are familiar with The Rainbow Fish books! Since I always hated reading, what I mostly remember are the video tapes we use to rent for the weekend from the library! These were a favorite with me, but I do remember Blondie liking the books a little more though!

The Cat In The Hat by Dr. Seuss

You know I had to put a Dr. Seuss book on here! We had quite a few Dr. Seuss books in our collection! When you’re in preschool at the school Blondie and I went to, we have a “Green Eggs and Ham” day and our teachers would literally make it for us! I don’t really have any memories of it but I do remember seeing the other generations fall in love with the idea of bringing this to life. I don’t think many preschool would actually eat it, since at that age, anything green is considered disgusting!

Frog and Toad Are Friends by Arnold Lobel

Now this was a very beloved book in our household! I used to get confused about the fact that a “frog” and a “toad” were different when they looked the same. I’m not saying how many years it took me to realize the difference! I think it is a very sweet book though!

What kind of books did your parents read to you as a child?

Anne Boleyn: More Than The “Second Wife”

Hi 🙂

Today is an interesting day and in ways kind of morbid too. Why? Because it is the anniversary of Anne Boleyn’s death. The second wife of King Henry VIII and mother of Queen Elizabeth I.

Since I am so into history, especially British royals I feel like Anne and Henry’s love story is probably the most interesting! I have over 7 different groups and like pages just on Tudor royals, whether they’re a bunch of authors and historians or actors who make their own Tudor dresses and parade around at fairs, it’s an exciting escape from the boredom I tend to find on my Facebook! I think for fans who love celebrities they either find the person from the end or in the middle of their careers. I have certain “obsessions” like that too, but Anne and Henry’s relationship is something totally different. I know how it got started, when they were finally married, when she was banished from court to finally her execution.

I feel conflicted when I play with the question if I were alive at the time of Anne Boleyn and King Henry VIII’s reign, how much would I support the marriage and future Queen of England. I also think that if I was transported there I would either be studied by the want-to-be-physicians or left for dead by my family because you know I’d be born with my disability! I just feel like I wouldn’t probably feel as I do about Anne, which sucks because I would believe all of the rumors than the woman that is our Queen. However, since I’m not, I get to show my support to this woman of power in her right.

She was one of the most influential women of that time period; some people would consider the amount of control she had over the king as witchcraft, but I think it was a partnership, between these two power houses. First you have, King Henry VIII being controlled by the Catholic church and the Pope, while Anne is part of the Reformation and is Anglican. As much as he found Anne attractive, she was of different religion and one that was unfavorable to the people of England. The fact that she broke him away from the Catholic way and his most trusted Cardinal Wolsey (he did that all on his own when he failed to get an annulment from Katherine) is amazing!

The second is that she never fully gave herself to him in the beginning and this is probably the most fascinating part of the whole thing considering while being married to Katherine of Aragon, he had multiple mistresses, not just Anne. She was the only bold one to tell him “no” whenever he offered more. We know that because he had a relationship with Lady Elizabeth Blount, while she was one of Katherine’s ladies in waiting, but she also gave him a living son. Despite the fact that she was already married and the child was considered a bastard, he was loved by his father, the King.

I think Anne Boleyn deserves an award for keeping her chastity during the relationship! For a man, who obviously didn’t have any control on his sexual appetite, I find this long wait to be almost frightening – I’m imagining this King who knows he can get anything he wants and can get bored easily with the ones he has relations with, as we see later in his life. I wonder how much confidence she truly had within herself to keep this relationship going. That’s something we’ll never really know, because I mean we know they “loved” each other, but he had six wives and two of those wives were beheaded!

She made a mistake shortly after giving birth, she gave birth to a girl: Princess Elizabeth, not a strong male heir like Henry had wanted from the get-go. This was another reasons why he wanted an divorce from his first wife Katherine of Aragon, mother to his other daughter Princess Mary. Katherine was previous married to his older brother Prince Arthur, but he died and Henry had married her but later feared that the first marriage was consummated, which he used against her to fight the Pope. Once Elizabeth was born, Anne would have miscarriages. She still wasn’t fulfilling the dream for the both of them. Shortly after that, he started seeking the affection from one of her own ladies-in-waiting, Jane Seymour. The theories are that the accusations of Anne convicting of adultery, incest and plotting to kill the king were enough to see a future with Jane, while Anne and the other unfortunate souls were arrested and sent to the Tower of London and they were all eventually beheaded in 1536,

As far as my opinions of her downfall, I think she was tricked. She wasn’t supported among the king’s people for the obvious reasons, so I think they were out to get her from the start of everything and once she wasn’t having any sons, people sort of put their plans in motion. However, as influential as she was with her husband, I have to keep an open mind of her making a mistake, I feel she might’ve gotten cocky in her role and panicked after when he became interested in Jane Seymour. I think she was desperate to give him a son an heir plus if she did this, she could be able to stay at court with her husband and children.

I often wonder if the Queens knew their husbands were sleeping with their ladies in waiting, why didn’t they just sent them away? If Katherine of Aragon had dome this to Anne, would she have been queen and given birth to Elizabeth? Again, another theory I’ve always had!

If I could get myself to sit down and write out a whole post or possibly multiple blog posts on the amount of history I have learned since I was a kid, I would do it in a heartbeat. After being able to share my knowledge about the vegan world, I would like to explore that side of myself with you, take you into what’s really stored inside my brain. You should feel thankful that I’m even considering this idea at all, but it is still early and you could not even like this post and then I wouldn’t have to say anything. I guess we’ll just have to find out what sort of information you would like to see more!

Would you like to read more historical posts on here? I would share how I got started on each one. I’ll also try to include some references as well! Let me know!

Album Review: “White Light” by Down For Whatever

Every once in a while I get requests to do reviews, but my favorite is obviously for music. It’s always fun and I love to promote especially if they’re a new band. Recently, I got a message on Twitter from the lead singer of Down For Whatever if I’d be interested  in reviewing their new album “White Light” and I thought it was too cool so I said yes and that’s the origins of that story.

Down For Whatever is a modern metal band based in Budapest, Hungary. If anybody knows me well enough, you know I’m a sucker for international artists and bands. The band consists of Dávid Zsoldos on drums, Róbert Császár playing the guitar and finally Kiki Diószegi on vocals. As I found out by looking through their Facebook page, they were formed in early 2015 and they released their first EP in December while the album that I will be talking about came out last month!

I was very intrigued to hear this album, especially seeing the track list and founding out the opening track is basically instrumental beginning, called “Prologue” it is very ominous and fierce. Now that is how you should start out every album, well in the rock and heavy metal category at least! The first real track is the title of the album “White Light” and I really like it. I like the introduction leading into this single, really digging hearing the bass guitar throughout, it has elements of synths but it’s pretty tame. It’s a mix of everything that I like so that’s a good sign. The second is “The Black March” and another great beginning, brings out my inner crazy (in a good way)! I really like the lyrics of this one, I feel like I can relate to it in parts.

Third is “Alienation” and this is a heavy sucker, not to say the first two weren’t by any means. I just think this one has less electronic sounds and it’s definitely a heavy metal song; it’s mean and gritty. However, it did take me a bit to get into it fully, once it was fading out that’s when I realized it’s potential and had to start it over again. After is “Let Me In” and again we go back to the electronic sounds before it basically explodes into this monster. There is definitely a higher pitched voice in the background, don’t really know who’s voice I am hearing but it’s a nice balance. Next is “Age Of Insanity” and with that kind of title, you know it’s going to be brilliant. At least, you’re always hoping it is! This is another one that I focused on the lyrics and that made me like it a little bit more. It definitely empowers the listener, or maybe that was just me!

We first had a “Prologue” and now that we’re in the middle of the album essentially, we have an interlude as well, and I saw “Kyrie” and it brought me back to my choir days in school, because we would see that song in winter months. It was always my favorite! Anyways, it’s only 33 seconds long and I didn’t even notice it at first, I just thought it was the ending of the previous track. KiKi has the space to just release a few lines before the next song starts which is “Better To Be Alone” and again, I’m surprising myself with listening more to the lyrics then the actual music. I’m very backwards today, but hey, I’m not complaining because I’ve been really into the words. I feel I could grow to really enjoy this one too, as sometimes I feel better to be alone too. Next is “Sea Of Tomorrow” this one seems to be a bit slower, but not like a ballad though. It definitely reminds me of a pop-rock kind of track, good for radio and I say that in a good way! I don’t see anything wrong with that!

The last three songs start with “Alpha & Omega” and this is surprising pretty tame too! I figured it would be a bit heavier, but then again majority of the songs I’ve heard, they have enough of those. I’m on the fence about it. It’s an okay track, but if anybody really knows me I can always change my mind after a while! The next doesn’t disappoint though, it has that creepy, mysterious intro that I am always look for, it is called “G.T.F.O.”  which translates to “get the fuck out” and this is the one that has a featured artist on it: Adam Connor. I have no idea what band he is from, I am not familiar with him at all, but I wonder if he’s the other vocalist I hear in the background of “Let Me In” despite the fact, he is not credited for it. Last one is “The Last Chapter” which again is an awesome title for the outro of the album. And of course, it ends on a high or in this case heavy sound. I get like an air-y vibe, almost a chill in the verses. It’s not like a gritty type of song that we’ve heard in the beginning of the album but it’s still pretty great too!

I think this album is very good, despite not exactly knowing how to really describe “modern metal” on here so I apologize for that. They remind me of Bring Me The Horizon in the different elements they’ve used in their last two albums. For once, I actually broke my own set of rules and looked to the lyrics which never really happens in any genre of music I listen to nowadays! I do think it saved them in certain songs, because there’s no ballads on this record and so after a while, I kind of got bored with hearing the same heavy sound over and over again. I never thought I’d say that either; although I say that I can’t say I hated any of the songs though.

Have you heard of Down For Whatever yet? If you have, what were your favorite songs?

Tune Tuesday | Denmark ’17

16473521_1380938371970489_8046133724634503262_n

Hi 🙂

It’s time for week three and we’re going to be talking about Denmark! It is always a country that I love to talk about on Tune Tuesday, but finding music from the actual country can be fairly difficult! Which is the main reason why I only have two to share today! These artists are very good and deserve free promotion!

The first person I am going to discuss is a native DJ by the name of Martin Jenson! I’m not going to lie but after I discovered him and his single “Solo Dance” on Spotify, I began to hear the track on Sirius XM BPM quite regularly! I don’t hear a whole lot about him anywhere, but I’m hoping to hear some more soon!

Lastly is Christopher, he was a late addition, I was on Facebook on a “liking” spree trying to find new music for these posts and ended up regretting not putting Finland back on my rooster but finding this guy too! First of all, he is REALLY cute! Blond hair and blue eyes! *shudders* He kind of sounds like Justin Bieber but I think I prefer his voice instead! Last month he released a new song called “Naked” and it’s really good! He also has two released albums on Spotify!

Have you heard of Martin Jenson or Christopher before? Always looking for suggestions for music in Denmark, if you know anybody, let me know!

OOTD: Faux Blue Jeans!

Happy Monday!

Yesterday on Twitter I made the announcement that I wasn’t going to post this today because I wasn’t feeling good but then later on I realized that on Saturday I celebrated 6 years of blogging on here and I had no post for it… Even I’m a little disappointed with myself!

Last Friday, my mom and I took a trip to see my nana. I hadn’t been able to hang out with her like one-on-one since the end of April, so we’ve been needing some time to chitchat. It was a lovely visit with even better weather! So I was able to do another OOTD but since I’ve stopped publishing on the weekends, you’ve had to wait a bit to see my outfit! In my last one, I mentioned that I had another pair of capris to show off and earlier in the week I went back to Walmart and purchased two shirts this time!

I’ll go from top to bottom. I got another superhero shirt! It is gray with various different superheros on the front with the word “Marvel” in big, bold, white letters that you cannot see thanks to my arms! I think I just buy these hoping to have at least one X-Men on it, but I don’t think I got lucky here. Honestly, the only ones I recognize on the entire shirt is Iron Man and Thor. I was really struggling to figure them out, there was no asking my mom. Apparently she can’t tell between “green” and “yellow”! Oh, in case anybody’s counting, this is my third Marvel shirt!

Now about my pants! The day we found these, I was a bit dumbfounded because I’ve had leggings that looked like jeans before. They were tight and the pattern was made so it looked like they’ve been worn forever and you had torn it to pieces! The difference was it was easy to put on and remove which is great for any wheelchair user! Unfortunately, they did have one downfall, the material use was rough and I didn’t actually wear them very much!

These are completely and 100% different as they are smooth to the touch on both top and underneath! They sort of remind me of “basketball pants” as my mom and I called them back in the day! They are sleek and soft, which is awesome for my legs! They retain heat just like regular jeans! They look like jeans and that’s what seems to freak my mom and I out, like where were these when I was in middle school?! My only negative thought about it is they are not skinny on my calves but hopefully I’ll find some others that are snug around that area!

What do you think of my outfit of the day? Yay or nay? What do you think of faux clothing garments, like jeans? Do you think they can become a thing?

DIY: The Glitter Egg Tree!

17522975_1448139311917061_8121698629694561019_n

Hello!

If you remember the previous DIY post about the plastic egg wreath we made, a couple of weekends later my Aunt Laurie came down with more plastic eggs and fake grass to do another project I found on Pinterest (that I can no longer find) around the same time I found the first one. My nana wanted to do the wreath, whereas I wanted to do the egg tree craft! I need something bright and a little bit obnoxious in my room so I thought this would be perfect!

17522815_1448145168583142_2690695085745427322_n

What you will need for this:

  • 4′ Cone
  • 7’x7′ Square Platform
  • 2 Bags of Plastic Eggs
  • 1 Bag of Fake Grass
  • Glue
  • Paintbrush (optional)

The first thing will need to do is build your platform for your tree to stand on, at first we weren’t going to do this, but my nana started to think about how the eggs were supposed to stay up on the cone, so she cut out a small square from part of our smaller form boards that we don’t use as much anymore. My nana calculated that it is seven inches on both sides. Since our luck with tracing comes in handy, I had her hold the cone in the middle of the square and I traced around it so that we had a better idea of where to place the glue and eventually put the cone on top.

17523226_1445826138815045_2538800149295110786_n17884158_1448134618584197_5331703753439430477_n17883733_1448134851917507_3692723156162829422_n

After that, we left it to dry.

Next we decided put the fake grass along the bottom of the cone. I chose purple grass (of course!) and we used what we had with the wreath; I put a couple of teaspoons of Elmer’s glue into a small cup and painted each corner at first with a bit of the glue, we then dropped a couple of balls of the grass and if I didn’t want to put my toes into the glue I borrowed a colored pencil and helped get them in place!

17522975_1448139311917061_8121698629694561019_n

The next visit we attempted the egg part, which proved to be a disaster for us!

In the original directions it tells you to use regular glue, like Elmer’s and with every layer you flip the egg on its other side. So like we started placed them on the actual platform and grass, this wasn’t so bad for the first four eggs. By the time we got finished, several were coming loose and the ones that wanted to stay in their place, couldn’t I guess, I tried to place them together but a couple were a little too close to the point with any motion, they started falling down off the entire thing. It was very frustrating for us! We finally got everybody to agree after my nana kept gluing them back on.

17884166_1448147365249589_6973037837060192185_n17757168_1448147361916256_950482655845107176_n17883607_1448148325249493_5156167722980283350_n

Some were place inward in the beginning like the pictures on the original, but then we just started laying them in front of the cone hoping that would be better, but it wasn’t. And then we moved onto the second level and it was the worst thing ever! Everything we did, the eggs would just fall. We put them in right, where the tips would be in the center of the bottom row. It was just the glue that wasn’t letting us move on to the next one.

17796661_1450534101677582_6389889077964259159_n17862454_1450534218344237_9192963525085387804_n

Unfortunately, my nana and I were not the ones who finished it. When my nana was in the hospital, she had Aunt Laurie and Uncle Mike finish both the tree and a wreath that she had done (the eggs were falling off on that as well!) so I don’t know much of what they did, but it kind of looks like everything is in the same sequence. I was told that they had used the hot glue gun to finish both projects so hopefully now we won’t have any little strays anymore!

The only thing we might have to is put the grass in the blank spots and then it will officially be done. I still don’t know where I would put it, but I’ll find a place for it somewhere in my room!
