Favorite Dance Films!

dance

Howdy!

I’m back with another list of films. This time, we are going to be discussing my favorite dance movies. I will say this, I have a lot. I actually wrote out a few movies one night on my To Do List pad, and I only had like four movies and then before I went to work on this post, I went on Google and realized “wow, I missed quite a few!” so it grew to like eight movies total!

I was going to open it up a little bit and add the singing aspect of it, but I figured we’d be here forever, so if you’d like to see that list, just let me know!

Dirty Dancing (1987) – Jennifer Grey, Patrick Swayze, Jerry Orbach, Cynthia Rhodes

Okay, first off if you are going to have a “favorite dance movie” list, Dirty Dancing has to be somewhere on that list, whether it’s at the top or somewhere in the middle is up to you, but it has got to be on this list in general!

I actually wasn’t introduced to this movie until later on in my preteen years! I think I saw it the same time frame I watched Grease for the first time. I love both of them just as much, but Dirty Dancing is probably my favorite though. This is such a sexy, but fun movie! I think I had more of a crush on Jennifer than I ever did for Patrick! As you’ll find out in this post, I like both ballet and ballroom dancing and I’m happy to say I enjoyed both before watching the dancing competitions on TV! And yes, I watched and absolutely loved that Jennifer went on Dancing With The Stars a few years ago!

Center Stage (2000) – Amanda Schull, Zoe Saldana, Peter Gallagher, Ethan Stiefel

I want to say that Center Stage was probably second dancing movie I ever was introduced to, but I cannot figure out who showed it to me, because I think I was still in middle school when I watched it the first time, but I think I might’ve watched it on Oxygen one afternoon and ended up liking it a lot. This has happened once before with Where The Heart Is.

This one introduced me to the dark sides of ballet, between the concerns of the dancers weight and limited space in different companies, after finishing it I remember thinking to myself “maybe it is a good thing I’m disabled!” I’ve always loved all kinds of dance, but ballet is at the top, even though I’ve never seen a real show or know any of the meanings or stories of the ballets besides The Nutcracker.

Save The Last Dance (2001) – Julia Stiles, Sean Patrick Thomas, Kerry Washington, Fredro Starr

I remember my mom told me about this movie when I was little, her words were “it has a big car explosion in it” and when I did eventually watch it with her, butt explosion wasn’t as big as she had explained. However, I ended up loving the story so much that I didn’t really care! Everything about it was brilliant for somebody at my age, because I learned about loyalty, standing up for myself, and seeing passed somebody else’s differences. I don’t understand racism and I still hate that I see specks of it everyday and I feel very ashamed of my ancestors who ever owned slaves centuries ago.

You Got Served (2004) – Omarion, Marques Houston, Steve Harvey, Jennifer Freeman, Meagan Good

You know you’ve seen a movie too many times in your life, when you don’t need to look up anything about that certain film because you know everything about it! I was addicted to this movie when I was like 13 or 15 years old. I watched that DVD so many times that I think by the time I started my sophomore year, it stopped working for me, and the same goes for the soundtrack too!

After getting into STLD, I figured this one would grab me and never let me go too! I loved the atmosphere of it, the dances were so crazy and yes, the last battle is probably the best of the movie. I usually always cry while watching it but it is so sweet!

Take The Lead (2006) – Antonio Banderas, Alfre Woodard, Rob Brown, Yaya DeCosta, Laura Bernati

This is the second movie that I got into that involved ballroom dancing, but I think it showed you more of the styles than Dirty Dancing. I thought it was an interesting film the first time I watched it, as high schoolers are fairly difficult to “break” as they don’t like to listen and generally hate dancing with a partner. It takes a very patient and clever person to make this happen!

Fun fact: Yaya DeCosta was a contestant on America’s Next Top Model a couple of years before this came out. I really loved her in this movie and she looked beautiful in that purple dress! And yes, Jenna Dewan is in this film too! She plays the character “Sasha” and has that big dance with the boys at the end. It’s probably one of my favorite scenes.

giphy13

Step Up (2006) – Channing Tatum, Jenna Dewan, Mario, Drew Sidora,

Oh yes! We have to talk about Step Up! I feel like Dirty Dancing was probably the ultimate dance movie in the late 80’s whereas Step Up became the best of the best of dance movies for the younger generations! Since I’ve seen both probably in the four years between each one, don’t ask me which movie I love the most, because I cannot answer it honestly!

It still shocks me that Channing and Jenna got married and had a kid after meeting on this movie, like holy crap! You got to see the love blossom in this movie and it actually makes me want to believe in love, but then after I finish it, my black heart comes back around and reminds me why I don’t believe in it.

Update: Four days after I officially finished on this post, it was announced that they were separating and I’ve been very sad about ever since.

Burlesque (2010) – Christina Aguilera, Cher, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell, Eric Dane

I love Burlesque! In 2015, my mom, Aunt Laurie, nana, and I went out to do some Christmas shopping at Dollar Store and my mom found the DVD, she pointed it out and asked if I wanted to get it, but somehow we never got it. I’m still stumped about it honestly, because she knows how much I loved it that why didn’t she just get for me anyways? It also wasn’t even that expensive either!

I know there are some scenes that were very corny, and seemed like they were taken from Coyote Ugly, but I really enjoyed it. I never knew about burlesque before watching the film and afterwards all I wanted to do was learn all about it, so that’s why I have a whole board on Pinterest dedicated to the form of performing! I really loved Cher and Christina Aguilera’s characters, but I really loved Kristen Bell as the bad girl “Nikki” she made me laugh and feel sorry for her. Oh and Stanley Tucci plays a good gay guy too!

Footloose (2011) – Julianne Hough, Kenny Wormald, Miles Teller, Dennis Quaid, Andie MacDowell

Last one, is Footloose and I must apologize for anyone who thought I would be discussing the original version, but I have never seen it! In 2011, my mom, sister and I went to see it in theaters and we really enjoyed it a lot. I was so glad to see Julianne Hough as the title lead, and I remember Kenny from the second installment of Center Stage that came out in 2005 I think. Oh, and we LOVED Miles as “Willard” he was such a fun character! Even my dad liked him after we rented the movie for a weekend.

If you haven’t seen any of these movies, you definitely look into them, because they’re all very good in their way! And every single film has a great soundtrack too. There are a few movies that I may not watch as much anymore but I still listen to the soundtrack almost every other day.

Are you a fan of dance films too? Did I put any of them on this list? Let me know below!

Ketchup With Us: Thunderbirds

Today is April Fool’s Day! Don’t Believe Everything You Read & Don’t Trust Anybody!

However, you can trust me because I’m pretty nice and truthful to everybody! It seems so weird that it’s April. I mean, it’s the fourth month of the year! Jeez! Time never wants to slow down anymore! Even when it does slow down, it’s always so boring. I like the beginning of new months, because that means the trees will be blooming soon and more flowers will be popping all over the place and my sinuses will going haywire. That part I could do without, and the storms and annoying bugs too! Anyways, a new month also means a new Ketchup With Us post and I’ve got a cool thing to share, the ladies of KWU has featured me as their esteemed KWU featured writer from the last time I posted. Thank you ladies and thank you dad for letting me use your shampoo!!

Mel and Michele are the hosts of Ketchup With Us. There are two ways of doing a post. You could do it in the way I’ve been doing it. A 10 minute post of whatever is in your head at the moment. Or you could link up any post you want, brand new or old post on your blog. Just send it to their blogs!

This week I went and found a new song or track to keep me going and entertained throughout the next 10 minutes. It is called, “Thunderbirds” and it’s a little different from an actual song because it’s actually off of Bill Engvall’s stand up comedy CD 15 degrees Off Cool and it sort of counts and it is 10 minutes and 14 seconds long! Plus you get a good laugh too!

I’ve been feeling pretty good lately, a little out of sorts but I kind of figured I’d do that later on as March went on. Yesterday was the anniversary of one of my friend’s passing and the day before I kind of broke down and I actually cried like a baby. It all just came at me so fast that I actually felt bad for my mom because it couldn’t have been at the most weirdest time of the day. Yesterday I was very distracted as I could be until I was around my uncle and he was reading the newspaper and found something very hilarious and sadly we were all laughing our asses off, including me and then my mind started working and I tried to stop and my mom tried to get him to find another article but it didn’t work. My mom cut my nails for me and I got to watch DWTS in the living room. Of all times my mom and I watch it together, it is the most memorable time of their lives and majority of the dances and stories, were emotional and I practically cried throughout the whole damn thing! I really cried during Amy Purdy and Derek Hough’s dance and story, it was very inspiring to me! I definitely loved Meryl and Maksim, Danica and Val, Charlie and Sharna, and lastly James and Peta’s dances as well! Everybody was entirely well done and I was so impressed with everybody’s dances and everybody is getting switched up next week. Sadly, Billy Dee and Emma had to leave after he’s doctor told him he couldn’t dance with his back. Despite the scores last week, he did really good! Emma was the perfect partner for him too! I’m so excited for next week, but also a little nervous too! Tonight I got a new Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. episode and I’m so excited for it, but I just hope my mom remembers not to interupt me when she gets home after work.

From Snowboarder To Dancer?

Things have a way of creeping up on me. If you’ve read my stuff before you remember me talking about how I found this Victor Borge CD Cover in my papaw’s old stereo system case and after I found out who he was, he was later brought up again when my nana and I were sorting through VCR tapes. Well, I’ve got a similar story to share with you. Back in January, I was on YouTube watching videos and everybody, including myself, hates waiting for the videos to load and we definitely hate the ads that are constantly on there as well. That afternoon when I was waiting for my video to load this very interesting commercial popped up on the screen. For once I actually turned off my music and didn’t even consider pushing the “Skip this ad” button either. The commercial was of P&G: Thank You, Mom and it was about the paralympic snowboarder Amy Purdy. This was my first introduction to this interesting and inspiring woman. She and her mom, talk about how she was infected and how she lost her legs in the process and how all she wanted to do was go back to snowboarding.

When I first watched it, I kind of teared up a bit because it was so inspiring to hear of her story. I didn’t quite understand why I had decided to watch it. I’m usually not interested in watching those types of commercials, because I usually do my ugly cry and thankfully I didn’t. Sometimes I don’t feel a connection to disabled athletes because I was never one in school (Powder Puff Football doesn’t count) and watching everybody play sports including family members hardly had impact on me. When Dancing With The Stars cast was revealed last month. She was in Sochi, Russia competing in the Paralympic Games (which she ended up taking home a bronze medal) during the first couple of weeks of learning her steps for DWTS and her dance partner Derek Hough was right there with her, learning all about her and watching her snowboard down those giant hills! Before the first episode of the new season had aired she had a LONG schedule. She won her medal that Friday before, got on a plane, got home on Sunday and did camera blocking and costume fitting and on Monday had her first run on the dance floor in front of all America to see. If I thought the commercial inspired me, her dancing, sure made me have some hope inside of me that I hadn’t had before. When you watch shows like this, it inspires you to do the same or something similar and for me, I’ve always loved dance. From ballet to hip hop and then the Viennese waltz to the Paso. Just one little problem, I don’t have the ability to stand on my feet and my electric wheelchair doesn’t move as well as a push wheelchair either!

I’m pretty sure everybody can agree when I say this, that when it was revealed that she was to be on the show. The first thought was, oh my god! I hope her feet don’t go flying across the room! During Monday night’s episode, that was one of the worries of their dance. They were doing Swing dancing and I thought that was pretty cool! However, I was concerned about how she would be able to do that, because before watching her dance, I didn’t even know that her prosthetic legs could bend at the knee. So when she started moving her legs all around I was impressed! And thankfully that her legs didn’t go flying off and hit Bruno in the face! It’s a very strange feeling to find a sense of inspiration from somebody who can walk like a normal person but has prosthetic legs too. If we weren’t told that she was missing her legs, we wouldn’t wonder about her legs and it would just be about her dancing completely. However, I like the fact we know because she is inspiration to not only myself but others as well. I have always watched DWTS Monday night and after the show was over, dream about one of the male pro dancers teaching me to dance and before, it just made me sad. Now I’m happy that it actually leaves me with a smile because if a woman like Amy could do it, why should I feel ashamed being able to move my hips around in the comfort of my own room. She and Derek were safe from elimination this week. They haven’t announced what they’ll be dancing next week, but I’m excited to see it and I’ll be ready to vote like always!

Smile The Sun Is Out!

boysOur internet connection was off from probably one in the afternoon until whatever time it decided to come back this morning. I did have a post lined up for today, but I didn’t finish it in time to be published and I don’t want to go back to it because I have no idea what I was thinking about when I trying to do it. Since my sister is here for her spring break, she’s been trying to keep up with her working out throughout the day like she does while she’s at school. So she’s been taking advantage of our backyard and since the weather has been amazing the past few days, the kittens have joined her while she’s thrown a softball and kicked her soccer ball around, but she was pretty bored Sunday afternoon so she talked mom into putting the Wii into the living room and that almost ended bad considering mom tore the sensor jack out of the wall of her room. So we were borrowing our neighbors jack for the time being. Nobody in our house has played with the Wii for a while and so she’s been using it up pretty good, between playing Just Dance 3, bowling, and baseball she’s been using up her energy well. I’m guessing she still regrets playing Guitar Hero too, because by the time she switched to that she was complaining about her wrist hurting a lot.

My parents decided to enjoy yesterday’s beautiful weather too and dad got the bike out and took my mom out riding with her new leather jacket and boots that she got on Saturday. I decided that since they were going out that I would sneak into the living room and watch Blondie play baseball. The babies were outside and they have been enjoying the nice weather a lot that everytime my parents open the back door they go running out to play, it’s so cute! While I was watching Blondie play, she was messing with her phone and I decided to see if anybody was at the door and only Midget was, and ChiChi really enjoyed me being on the floor too! She jumped on my legs and licked my face. Three weeks ago, I traveled into the living room because I was bored and I haven’t scooted on my butt into  any place in this house for so long that my thighs actually burned and were so sore. I’m happy to that when I scoot into the living room yesterday they didn’t hurt as much, but that soon came back to bite on the butt because after a couple of games my sister switched Just Dance and did dances before asking if I wanted to do it, I said sure because I wanted to have some fun too! So she carried me to my wheelchair and grabbed one of my elbow pads because my pinky toe isn’t the strongest toe ever and I have a tendency of dropping the controller on the floor because it just gives out. I’m so low in the chair that the sensor had trouble with finding a couple of times, and when you’re doing dance moves that’s not a good thing, but I got eight points with five songs.

By this time my parents were back and my sister was being nice and she got me a drink because apparently between the sweat, the pain in my thighs, and my breathing it sounded like I needed one! I asked my sister if getting eight points with only doing five songs was a good thing? For one thing, never asked her able-bodied sister who gets four to five stars with each song she does, because I think in a way I deserved the look she gave me. She gave me this look like “ehhh…” and what is funny was my mom was watching her and she saw the same expression I did and we both called her out on it. Thankfully, I’m the type of person who sees the humor in almost everything so she’s forgiven because I was stupid for not rearranging my words better. After that, she took out the batteries and we had been watching Ridiculousness the night before and we taped the new episode for dad and since we were all in the living room having a family moment we ended up watching it together, this time with fewer commercials! Today, my mom said it’s supposed to be like in the 70’s and to me, that’s perfect weather to go outside and go on a walk, but there’s a big chance the ground is still moist and muddy, so my plans may not be accomplished but that’s okay maybe my sister will be ready to play Just Dance later this afternoon.

Fun Moment With My Mom And Sister

Oh, it feels good to laugh out loud. Even if I was just laughing at my mother and sister for actually attempting to do this dance tutorial for a song just a half hour ago. God, it was hilariously good for my soul!

My mother had basically asked us both if we had heard Jason Derulo’s new song, “Talk Dirty To Me” and I had heard parts of it, but only that because between the album cover and title, I was sad that Jason had lowered himself to actually making a sexy song. I don’t know if any of you know this, but I’m tired of all of these dirty songs. As much as I tried to ignore it, the actual music is awesome. The lyrics are just another story for me. Anyways, my sister had said she had heard but she didn’t like it very much. That is very odd for her because she loves rap music. She can literally listen to Miley Cyrus music and not get weirded out about it. That must be a skill I haven’t mastered yet. After my mom had put me in my chair and Blondie finished getting ready, my mom found this video of three guys dancing to some choreography to Jason Derulo’s song. She watched it for a bit and then afterwards, she had to show the both of us these guys dancing and said to Blondie, “I want to learn this.” Well, I think my mom should keep the phrase, “be careful what you wish for” in her head for the next time she finds something such as this again.

It was around 6:30pm that they came through my door. My sister basically said, “get ready to laugh your ass off” and I immediately started freaking out inside because you know it’s never really good when nobody in your family says that especially with a smile on their faces. For some odd reason, they decided to do this in my room. Which is nice, don’t get me wrong or anything, but I was mainly concerned about my floor. It is not the best room to do any dancing or jumping around, because it literally feels like if you jumped five times your feet might go through the floor. So instead of moving everything to the living room where the floor is somewhat more steady and more room to actually dance. My room was basically turned upside down. Everything was pushed back away and they had to use my laptop (and thankfully YouTube worked) to get the videos at a good angle so they could watch the movements. It started off them watching the first video my mom found this morning and then as it started, at the top it said something about get the steps/tutorial so after failing the first three times for doing it with the first video. They switched over to the second.

Once they got going and the guy was teaching them the moves, my sister was getting a little bit faster than my mom. When they first started off my mom was by my door and my sister was over by me. I was still lying down on my bed because sadly I can’t do this kind of dancing. I can shake my hips a little bit and maybe some of the feet work, but that’s pretty much it. When my sister was on my side, I kind of felt a little bit safe. After learning the first eight counts and then switching to the first video to do it with the music. I could not stop laughing. If one messed up, the other did too. It just kept going back and forth. Before they did the second part of the dance, they switched places because my mom was using the door as her shield to keep her balanced. So my sister had her switch places and that was my cue to sit up and back up towards the wall. That ended up being a good idea because my mom kind of fell on my bed a couple of times after accomplishing different moves. I’m proud to say that both of them got through two eight counts of the dance. They have a little bit more to go, but my sister doesn’t go back until Monday so I’m pretty sure they can learn the rest tomorrow. Blondie has most of it, because after mom got through those two parts, she kind of got overheated and took a break. So she kind of kept on dancing. I didn’t move back until she gave up too.

We can definitely say that we’re a little tired of hearing “Talk Dirty To Me” at the moment. Blondie and mom’s feet have rug burn and their knees hurt. Probably their entire bodies too as the night goes on. Blondie told us today that she is taking a Zumba class in college and they actually give credit in it too. She has always danced since she was little. She tried being on the dance team twice, but it was so expensive that she couldn’t keep up with it. When she was in the sixth grade she was in a dance battle with another girl in her grade and I’m not sure who win it, but I do remember saying it was awesome! She can pick up dances pretty quickly but then again she does that with practically anything. My mom is a lover of Dancing With The Stars and she loves it, but I don’t think she’d ever learn ballroom dancing in general. She can do Just Dance on the Wii but she doesn’t do it very much. I think the last time she played it was a couple of years ago. It was either for Thanksgiving or Christmas, I don’t remember what holiday it was. I just know that if I played it my hips would break off, with this cold weather, they would just snap out of their sockets. Not a good thing is it?

Yeah, so that’s how my evening of fun went and now I’m going to listen to mellow music and hopefully eat dinner and go to sleep. I might try to finish Captain America first before I go to sleep, but I don’t know yet. I remember how tired I got after I ate so I could setting myself up for a disaster. Probably should just wait until tomorrow to finish it. Hope you enjoy your evening and your Sunday!

Five Sentence Fiction: Dancing

What it’s all about: Five Sentence Fiction is about packing a powerful punch in a tiny fist. Each week I will post a one word inspiration, then anyone wishing to participate will write a five sentence story based on the prompt word. The word does not have to appear in your five sentences, just use it for direction. PS: I was listening to Celine Dion’s new album as I was writing this, especially the songs “Didn’t Know Love” and “Thank You.” So that’s my inspiration for this week!

This week: DANCING

Your fingers gently press the piano keys in a way, that you can feel the love and passion in the music.

Your heart and soul are dancing in harmony for once and everybody is enjoying the freedom it brings.

As the saxophone and trumpets start playing to give it more of an uptempo feel, people are having time containing their feet.

The drummer sits down in his small chair and begins to play his part and their heads begins to nod to the beat.

Once the beautiful singer starts singing her heart out loud in a raspy voice, it only take five seconds before a man and wife get up from their chairs and create a dance floor, even if there wasn’t one to start from.

The Mini Short Story – The FSF Post From Before

After seeing some comments on my post for this week’s Five Sentence Fiction. I have done a short, short story. So the ones who requested it. This is for one. I went with a romance take to it. Hell, I even used the word prompt in it. It’s just one of those nights. (:

Erica has been working on her new routine all day long. It’s been trapped inside her mind. She has been looking for a new place to go because she always feels like she is being followed, but it is the only place with full length mirrors attached the long walls. She walks inside the small room and plugs her ole trusty boombox into the wall and grabs her iPod out of her pocket and plugs it into the speakers. She first plays something soft but as it continues on, it gets louder and more upbeat. It’s the perfect warm up song. After ten minutes of the warm up, she is ready to start getting these ideas out of her mind.

Tony works in the building. He works as a janitor and always has his headphones in his ears to make his job more enjoyable, but the fact that he has to clean toilets and the floor never gives him the same joy as music. Tony has been a hip hop dancer since he was able to walk. He practices everytime he gets the chance, even at work. He makes sure the hallways are empty first before he starts his stunts and uses the mop as one of his props. One of his favorite time of the day is when the girl Erica comes to practice in one of the empty rooms in the back of the building. She has found him starting at her through the window in the door, all she did was smile and give the finger. He didn’t have a chance for the world with her, but he couldn’t help but fall in love with her dancing.

Tony has wondered about a room right next door to Erica’s practice room. It has been jammed for years but today, it actually came loose when he put the key in. To his surprise the room was pitch black, but the only light that came through was the light from the room next door. The mirror was a two-way mirror and finally he could watch her beautiful body dance and he couldn’t get caught. Yes, he waved at her like a little kid when he first in the middle of the room. He didn’t bother to turn on the light in case, it went through the next room. That’s all he needed was to get caught now. Erica was more of a ballet dancer that was just discovering her hip hop side. He wished she’d let him teach her things to make her more relaxed.

As Erica tried to get most of the dance moves out of her head. She felt a weird feeling as she was being watched. She walked over to the middle of the room and the song started over and she started again, this time she didn’t count in her head, she just went with the flow, but as she went through the moves this time around she felt like somebody was practicing along with her. Tony undressed out of his janitor suit and tossed his iPod out of his pocket and took the headphones out of his ears and jumped as the next move. It was a scene from the movie Step Up, but the only thing was neither one knew what was going on with themselves. He did the same movements she did and gave some of his flavor to it. When backed into the mirror, she felt the force in the mirror even more. She raised her higher and Tony walked towards her and felt her energy and put his hand to hers as it was magnetic. They just stared at each other not knowing if they could see each other or not. At that moment, they didn’t care, it was an incredible feeling anyways.
