Book Review: “Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter by Kate Clifford Larson

Hello!

Since ending my original reading challenge for the year in July, I’ve only finished one book for August and September, but October was a little different. I continue to read multiple books at the same time but I’m not going through them as quickly as I did in the beginning of the year. I find it a little weird but I think if I can finish out the year with 25 books is an awesome accomplishment!

Last month I found a book that I’ve been wanting to read for a very long time, since probably 2015, but I never saw it on the shelves at Wal-Mart after it came out (and trust me, I searched for it!) so it has been a part of my TBR list for much longer than I wanted it to. However, I was going through Prime Reading one day and just scrolling through and there I saw that beautiful cover that has basically been plastered into my depths of my mind for the past six years, and I knew I just had to get it.

They were the most prominent American family of the twentieth century. The daughter they secreted away made all the difference.

Joe and Rose Kennedy’s strikingly beautiful daughter Rosemary attended exclusive schools, was presented as a debutante to the Queen of England, and traveled the world with her high-spirited sisters. And yet, Rosemary was intellectually disabled — a secret fiercely guarded by her powerful and glamorous family. Major new sources — Rose Kennedy’s diaries and correspondence, school and doctors’ letters, and exclusive family interviews — bring Rosemary alive as a girl adored but left far behind by her competitive siblings. Kate Larson reveals both the sensitive care Rose and Joe gave to Rosemary and then — as the family’s standing reached an apex — the often desperate and duplicitous arrangements the Kennedys made to keep her away from home as she became increasingly intractable in her early twenties. Finally, Larson illuminates Joe’s decision to have Rosemary lobotomized at age twenty-three, and the family’s complicity in keeping the secret. Rosemary delivers a profoundly moving coda: JFK visited Rosemary for the first time while campaigning in the Midwest; she had been living isolated in a Wisconsin institution for nearly twenty years. Only then did the siblings understand what had happened to Rosemary and bring her home for loving family visits. It was a reckoning that inspired them to direct attention to the plight of the disabled, transforming the lives of millions.

I may not be interested in politics, but there have been a few Presidents in the past that I have enjoyed learning about over the years–some were forced because of school but my love for the Kennedy’s has always been something I’ve grown to learn about on my own. Since I am a history lover, the story about the Kennedy family has been like my other obsession’s; where I have to watch every documentary and movie about them. Thanks to this though, I did have some knowledge about Rosemary Kennedy but it honestly wasn’t much until I was able to read this book by Kate Clifford Larson that I really got a bitter sense about Rosemary in general but also the ins and outs of the elite American families in the mid-1900’s!

I think there are many things to keep in mind about reading this book, Rosemary was born in early 1918, at a time where disability as a whole was looked down upon by everybody. Despite the fact that Rose and Joe Kennedy chose to keep her at home with their family, it wasn’t the norm back then. Some families were very embarrassed by any kind of imperfection, especially a family that was in the media a lot through aristocratic events and political campaigns. She was taught to be a lady out in public and Kate does make a point to say how much Rosemary loved to dress up and dance with various boys, who wouldn’t know she was disabled at all because she carried herself in such a way that she had to be absolutely perfect.

When I started reading, I began to really feel for both Rose and Joe, because in a way they reminded me of my own parents. They didn’t quite know what to do with this child, who is completely different than other children they have been around. Although Rosemary had two older brothers, I had two older cousins so my folks clearly knew I was going to have more challenges to deal with compared to them. The differences between Rosemary and I, she went to various Catholic owned schools in the Boston area, plus a boarding school in England whereas I stayed in two schools close to home. I was put in a number of special needs classes while in school but I was also taking regular classes as well. My disability was mainly physical, not mentally but I would still occasionally socialize with kids who had one or other and sometimes both too.

There were a lot of stuff that I was happy about, like when Joe Jr. and Jack would take Rosemary to dances and actually dance with their younger sister. They seemed to really care for her, technically all of the Kennedy children absolutely adored her! The two sisters Rosemary was basically paired up with all through her life were Kathleen or Kick as she was called by family and close friends, and Eunice. Rosemary and Kick went to a debutante ball in England when Joe Kennedy was an Ambassador for the United States just before World War II broke out. The author mentions how much Rosemary was like her mother Rose on her love of fashion, but the fact that she made such a positive impact on everyone to the King George VI and Elizabeth, The Queen Mother, to the press and rest of the families invited to the huge event makes you think how much jealous could have been produced among the sisters.

Now there is a chapter that I really grew to hate, and it is titled “November 1941” and this date is significant because this was when Rosemary Kennedy was changed forever after having the a new operation: it is called a “lobotomy” and although this is a known to have happened to her now, but only one person is known to make the decision for her to have it done. Let’s just say that I lost faith in this person afterwards. I was so angered by the result of it and found out how this person died to be a little bit of karma working some magic later on in their life.

Anyways, I did have a favorite chapter and it was the last – which was “Rosemary Made The Difference” and this was such a great section because as much as the Kennedy clan didn’t want to make their work about creating better medical discoveries, school teachings, and other resources for mental challenged people to be defined by Rosemary, but they were clearly inspired by everything she went through all through her life but also what her siblings saw as well. Eunice Kennedy was able to do a lot in the small amount of time while both of her brothers Jack and Robert Kennedy were in office as President and Senator respectively, like creating the Special Olympics! Rosemary’s youngest sibling Ted Kennedy was also responsible for getting the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) into law in 1990.

Rosemary is at the heart of everything, without her, I feel like the Kennedy name would be extremely different. Everybody knows about the ‘curse’ that plaques this family. but more people need to know about Rosemary, the ups and downs on how it was like (and still is) to be disabled in a world where everyone has to fit a certain mold to be accepted into society and that was the main reason why I wanted to talk about of these chapters on here.

I hope you check out this book whether or not you are as obsessed about The Kennedys. If you are taking part in Nonfiction November, or if you are interested in learning about mental disabilities throughout history, maybe you should consider giving this a chance. I hope you enjoy!

Have you read “Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter” by Kate Clifford Larson yet? If you have, what were your thoughts about it?

DIY | M&M’s Pumpkins

Hello!

The last time I did a post about pumpkins was in 2017! So, that was two years before my sister had my nephew–technically, she might’ve been pregnant with him if I remember correctly! Anyways, we were hoping to have all three of them over to have a big painting party but between the COVID scare and work schedules, it didn’t end up happening.

For once, we finally decided on a theme for the pumpkins. We have always wanted to do that, but then after some time we would forget about it and end up on doing our own thing. However, my mom was looking through her Facebook memories and found a photo of around six pumpkins painted with various M&M faces from the commercials, I shared this with her back in 2015, and I’m so glad I did because this was a perfect idea to do with our front stairs display, but of course we had to do ours differently.

Things you will need:

  • Pumpkins – various size is optional
  • Old newspapers
  • Brushes – sponge & regular
  • Paper plates
  • Acrylic paint

The last time we did this, our cats were fairly distracted and didn’t even come around to the front porch to rub up on us, so it was a pleasant surprise that I think all three of us enjoyed. For this project, we started off on feeding the cats before going outside to start and I think that was our issue because they eat quickly and if they know someone is on the porch they think we brought out even more food for them! They act like we don’t feed them at all and we do, trust me!

I want to say within five minutes of coming outside to get into a comfortable position, and actually begin to paint the pumpkins, all of the cats came up to the porch to find giant orange things stealing their attention. Honestly, they behaved like good kitties throughout the entire thing.

This was a two day project, as the first my mom and I just painted on the base coats on the five pumpkins we had, and unfortunately my mom didn’t take my advice to purchase the primorary colors in medium size bottles, because it is really easy to mix the colors with acrilyic paint. As I mentioned above on the things you’ll need, your pumpkins can be in various sizes but you also need to keep in mind about the size of paints you have too. We had somewhat larger ones with small tubes of paint, so we ran out of some colors quicker than we expected to; which is why I heed this caution to you as I do not want you to be stuck with one color and find it run out before finishing the entire surface. We had to do this with our blue pumpkin. It started out with a bright blue but the next time my mom went back with a darker color for the bottom and she wasn’t very happy about the contrast in the end.

In order to cover the entire pumpkin with paint, we used the large sponge brushes. I really enjoy using these types of brushes because since they are sponges, they can absorb quite a bit of paint so you don’t necessarily have to go back and get more on the tray, but I also like them for the fact they are easy for me to grip and move around the object. I ended up painting three out of the five pumpkins while my mom did the other two and the bottoms of mine because I can’t keep my balance and paint at the same time.

The really cute part happened the next day, after we left them outside to dry fully, my dad really fall in love with the red one so he decided to come into my room later that day to create a face for the pumpkin. He made his very animated and everything had to be perfected but unfortunately he was only able to do that one, while the next time my mom and I went back to them, we just freehand the faces with a sharpie. I thought this would be easier so to give us some kind of guide to what the faces should look like, and I’m glad we did it this way and because it was helpful to us.

After my mom finished her pumpkin: the only girl and green pumpkin. (which turned out really cute, but I think we overestimated the size of the pumpkin because the whole face is so small compared to the rest, but like I told her, everything is a trial and error; we learn from previous “mistakes” and move on. If we had decided to keep the letter “m” underneath the faces, I think we might’ve liked it a lot more, but really it was not only her first time doing freestyle, she also exercised that she does have some patience stored within her. Honestly, both of my parents have expressed that they don’t have any patience at all, but yet they really took their time to get their ideas in order. It was a lot easier to convince my mom that she didn’t need to be perfect with it than dad, because for us we got through our pumpkins faster than he did and he also became very messy too!

In his defense though, he not only went off a totally different picture we did and on top of that, everything was bigger and since he likes everything to go right, it was very critical of his handiwork. Since we only gave faces to three of the pumpkins, I was next on the latter and I think I mirrored what each of my parents did with their pumpkins. I kept myself contained in my mind and thoughts but I really attempted to find a medium to both of them and I think I did a pretty good job after not painting a face for a long time.

As my dad was working on this lone tomato looking pumpkin, my mom was busy with creating the “M” on our final two pumpkins. Since she went back with the blue one, it hadn’t dried enough before she started on the white so on the picture you can kind of see how the letter blending into the background a bit, but thankfully she was able to add two coats on it so it is readable and personally, I think it looks cool like that. It is unique with the marbleizations of all three colors. The brown one also has a cool factor too, two of pumpkins had these great greenish veins going from the bottom to the top and unfortunately they were painted over with the red pumpkin but I guess mom thought it was neat too, so it almost turned out to look like a bowling ball in a way!

It was pretty fun and interesting to do a craft with my folks, especially since one has confessed that they are not a big fan of these types of things, but has painted quite a few pumpkins this month! After we finished our creations, my dad has made me a desk out of a Styrofoam so I can have an accessible table for my future projects. I am really happy that he didn’t make it before the pumpkins because I don’t it could take all of the weight of the some of them!

I think I am officially done with this post. I’m not sure when I will be doing another project, but when I do, you know I’ll try to put it on here for you. So, I hope you have enjoyed this crazy adventure that happened in the middle of October and here are the rest of the photos that were taken in the course of two days!

Have you been able to do any type of DIY or crafty projects for Halloween or fall in general? It doesn’t have to be with paint like ours, but I would still like to see your end result. Send me your pictures through Facebook or Instagram please!

October Playlist

Hello!

October is a strange month; you have artists coming out with a softer note to their music, it makes their fans and other listeners feel cozy and enjoy everything that is autumn as a season. On the other hand, you have others creating purely for the spooky vibe that is Halloween. In years past, I feel as though I haven’t appreciated the gentle side and I am noticing how much I never watched the raining of the leaves with excitement as I have recently. And because of this, the music I have wanted to listen to has taken a totally different tone.

My intake of both Evanescence and In This Moment has been massive! I feel like they are the perfect bands for this time of the year. They have a certain creepy flare and almost every song, whether it is a ballad or heavy are built around the notion of mystery. Unfortunately, I only have two full albums from each band on my iPod but thankfully I have a giant collection of other metal bands from all over the world that also love that type of thing for their music. And I share a number of them on my October playlist from Spotify. If you would like to check it out, just click here to be transferred to the see everything that has some grain of monstrous in it.

Before I start going into depth about my Top 25, I have a little surprse for you. Here is this month’s Artist Highlight!

120955190_1237210483321427_3495336083566498058_n

I am always so happy whenever artists and bands send me a message on my social medias or in a regular email – just as a warning, if you have sent me an email, please send me a DM through any of my socials as a head’s up! Mandala was very nice and patient with me while I tried to figure out the best way to highlight him and music on my blog. His newest single, “Modern Struggle” is out and he will release his album “The Chronicles Of A Blind Man” next month!

The introduction has this a nice melodic but also sounds like an ode to a cell phone ring in a way. The entire beat is really good and subtle but thanks to the fact that his voice is nice and clear, you can clearly hear the lyrics and the meaning behind it is brilliant. We, as a society have a struggle between good and evil, a mere modern take of what is right and good. So, there is a lot of things to take into consideration about what we do as individuals living our lives.

If you’d like to look into Mandala, you can find him on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

I hope you have enjoyed that little review of a brand new artist! Let’s change gears, and go back to our regular schedule. Here are my Top 25 for October and I really hope you enjoy it!

I was inspired to finally do them after my friend Ella started them in late September and one of the songs she shared actually made it to this list, Can you spot it?

What were you listening this October?

Mini Fall Décor Haul

Hello!

I love to decorate, as many of you know, and one of my favorite seasons is fall. When I was younger, I only adored it because that signaled to me that my birthday was quickly approaching, but now I have various reasons why I love about it.

On Instagram, I follow two accounts that post about everything autumnal and Halloween, and once September starts, the instantly see their content constantly and it’s eerie how quickly I become jealous because most of the time, they are sharing the ALL of the new stuff in stores. By week two, I could have saved up to like 10 items that I’ve found and possible want if it’s not too expensive!

Well, my parents agreed to give me $100 to spend last month, I could spend it on anything I wanted and I went back on Wal-Mart’s website for the third time to search for autumnal pieces for my room; and without the paint for our pumpkins and Command strips (even though those are vital for hanging things up!) I still come back under my original budget, which is really good because like I told my mom it could’ve been much worse!

THE PUMPKIN WREATH – $9.98

This was honestly one of the first things I saw back in early August that I instantly fell in love with, because it has everything I love about this time of the year: pumpkins, the colors orange and red, and sunflowers!

The wreath itself is very unique, because instead of being in a circle shape, it is designed to be like a pumpkin. It looks like it was made with sticks but my mom pointed out to me that it is actually metal! In the middle it has different fake foliage, berries and sunflowers in a series of fall colors. It is honestly so pretty and I like the fact that it isn’t your everyday fall wreath either.

It was hard to figure out where to place this, because I have a section of my wall for seasonal wreaths, blame it on my mom, because she brought home this cute and neon colored sunflower wreath and I thought it was cute and summer-y, thus starting me on this “tower of seasons” thing now.

However, once the hooks came in, I just ended up making my decision by having it hang on the front of my bedroom door. My mom and I actually love the placement. It gives our guests this little nod to fall.

AUTUMN SKULL SHIRT – $16.99

So, for the next item that came in, it drove us a little nuts because when my dad said I received another package in the mail, he said it was “pants” and I knew I didn’t order any pants. I was thinking about it but couldn’t find anything that I liked so I kept thinking on what it could be, and then I remembered my list and I thought dad had misread the text and instead of “pants” it could be “paints”? Well, after we got into a little argument about it, he opened it up and found out we were all wrong and it ended up being my shirt.

I was torn between this one and another I found, but the image on the website looked like it was glittery and I do not deal well with certain textures on my hands and this realization was the result to the conflict. This top is in a darker grey, and has the outline of an adult size skull in black on the right side whereas the left has green, yellow and orange colored leaves and a large sunflower in the eye socket.

I may not listen to heavy metal as much anymore, but I still enjoy my skulls and spikes hardcore, so when this popped up, I couldn’t say no to it. Hell, my parents wouldn’t been able to deny it either! I mean, if you are close to me, you would automatically say “this screams Meghan!”. So, I purchased it and my dad did say it is badass.

STACKED PLAID PUMPKINS – $16.99

For this next one, I was really unsure about it. I absolutely loved them to pieces, and the fact you got two for the price, I thought it was too mean to not get it but I didn’t know if I enjoyed the plaid part so much. These pumpkins came in both black and orange, and for a good thirty minutes I was going for the black and white ones. I thought they would fit better with the rest of my black stuff but honestly the orange just seemed more practical for me.

They are so adorable! When my mom brought them into my room, they were wrapped in a mesh case that looked easy to take apart, – I don’t do this because I can’t get my toes around a pair of scissors! Anyways, the pumpkins are stacked together with each one in a different size, overall it is medium and could fit anywhere you chose to put it, whether it’s on your porch or in a corner of a room.

MOON PHASE GARLAND – $20.94

As I mentioned at the top, I had two items that really inspired me to decorate my room for the season. I have always been interested in our planet system, my favorites are: Earth (of course!), Moon, Jupiter, and sorry to anyone who says Pluto is a dwarf moon, but I still adore Pluto. Anyways, the Moon has a lot of meaning for me. If I am outside at night, I instantly want to find the moon. I love to look for it during the day and night, and I am one of those people that will stop doing something and point with my big toe and say “there’s the moon!” So, with that being said, I want it even closer to me and make it part of my autumnal bedroom.

They have this banner or garland in two different colors on Walmart’s website: gold and silver! I haven’t been the biggest lover of gold anything, but since my walls are basically grayish, it wouldn’t look right in the silver. I just didn’t think it would shine as well, so I went for the gold instead and honestly, it can be a fall time color or at least that’s what I keept telling myself!

One little warning for everyone reading this post, since my mom and I had so many issues dealing with this, it might be easier doing everything DIY! The fact that we had no instructions, three pieces had some kind of red marking on the gold side, the clip to hook it to the top and pendent were hard as a rock, and half of the phases will not turn over to the gold (and because of that, I now have to paint them all!) that my dad literally hollered out to mom in the mist of this, “next time you are inspecting the list!” but honestly I don’t think they would have helped us in the end! Click here to find the video that seemed a lot more easier and cheaper compared the hassle we endured.

AUTUMN LEAVES BLANKET – $21.99

So, this is the final thing I got because let’s be honest, you can NEVER have enough blankets, right?! The really awesome part about it though is that, it arrived on the first day of fall too!

I have six blankets on my bed, four of which actually serve a purpose for me, but all but two are Christmas themed. Yes, this was my reason for wanting to get this blanket! To be honest though, my Transformers blanket is getting old, and feels really worn at times so it’s time to retire it.
For this blanket, it is fleece, which is like my favorite thing in the world! They keep me warm and I tend to use them to help ease my elbows–if I don’t have one underneath my elbows and lay on one side for too long, the skin on my elbows can break and according to my mom, it is a space that is really difficult to heal! The blanket is a light beige colored with a lot of varied reds, orange, brown, and yellow leaves scattered around the entire sheet.

WHITE CORD LIGHTS – $11.98

Last Christmas, my mom got me a box of “white” lights to wrap around my tree, but unfortunately the tree itself was way too small for them so we improvised and put them around my window and it just looked gorgeous surrounded by the tulle sunflower curtain that you instantly feel so much joy about what it brings to such a small space.

In the span of late November to mid-April 2020. we used up the lights a lot and I say “we” because I know for a fact that other people in my family enjoyed them just as much as I do. We did try to purchase another set of lights, but everytime we went to plug them into the sockets, they were blink like crazy and I didn’t like it and neither did my mom, especially since I tend to leave them on all night, I knew if we kept these on like usual I would be more paranoid than I already am at night. So, within an hour and a half after my parents put them around my window, I said nope and that was the end of that conversation.

Thankfully, my mom went to Dollar General about a week after I made up my original list of fall decorations and she found out that they were putting out early Christmas items and one of the things they had on the shelves were two boxes of the right kind of lights, which are the white cord and white or “warm” lights. They were on sale for $2 a piece so she ended up buying me two boxes just in case we needed a back up later on! After barely six months of being in the darkness again, I have them back and it feels even more like fall to me inside the four walls of my room. Although she found them from another store, I have the same brand linked to Walmart, and of course since Christmas is right around the corner the price went up to almost $20 but still, I don’t think this wouldn’t mattered to us either way!

Sometime next month, I will put up the kind of “decorate with me” or “bedroom tour”, I haven’t exactly figured out what the title will be but it’ll be about where I put everything in my room. You’ll see everything I got and hopefully by the time it goes up, I will have a before and after snapshots of the moon garland too. Cross your fingers and toes that it goes well for us!

Now it is your turn, I want to know what kind of stuff you like to decorate around your space? Do you have a specific aesthetic you follow throughout each room? What is your newest piece you have now?

Book Review: “Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children” by Ransom Riggs

Hello!

There have only been two books in my life that have taken me practically forever to finish: Harry Potter and The Prisoner Of Azkaban by J.K. Rowling and Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs! I’ve always known the issue behind POA but with the other it’s been a mystery. I have always thought it was entertaining but for some odd reason it’s taken me over four years to finally get it off of my TBR list!

The year I purchased the paperback edition was in 2016! I thought it wasn’t that long ago honestly, but I guess I was wrong. I’ve tried to read in 2018 and made some progress but I thought the huge gap in between each time I would stop and read it would confuse me, so once I made the commitment to actually be done with it, I wasn’t necessarily planning on doing a review. It wasn’t until I reached Chapter 9 that I ended up changing my mind and thus, I am here to unleash anything and almost everything…

So, if you haven’t read the first book and want to sometime in the future, please be warn because there might be spoilers listed below.

9460487._SY475_

A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of very curious photographs. It all waits to be discovered in Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, an unforgettable novel that mixes fiction and photography in a thrilling reading experience. As our story opens, a horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow-impossible though it seems-they may still be alive. A spine-tingling fantasy illustrated with haunting vintage photography, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children will delight adults, teens, and anyone who relishes an adventure in the shadows.

taken from Goodreads.

I do remember the day I found this book at Walmart, because the film was being released in theaters and I had seen Candice King from The Vampire Diaries talk about it on her Twitter back in 2016, so it was purely a trendy book at the time and I fell into the trap and basically begged my mom for it that day.

When I first began reading, Jacob Portman wasn’t a teenager in my head at all. I pictured him in his early 20’s and this never went away until he actually gets inside the loop itself. I wasn’t the biggest fan of him either, I thought he was cocky and I don’t really care for characters like that in any age, so it was somewhat difficult but once I got over that hurdle, I started to see him in a different light.

I still don’t believe Jacob was a favorite of mine, at least not as much as I adored both Emma Bloom and Millard. The name Millard has been added into this month’s favorite names, but I just pictured him like Griffin in the Hotel Transylvania films, but way smarter and younger of course! I felt like Emma and I could be best friends. I really enjoyed her spunk and understood her compassion for Abe and Jacob. For me, I loved the story between Emma and Abe, more than her and Jacob. I thought this was creepy!

Since I waited basically five years to complete the book to watch the film afterwards, I hadn’t seen the cast list at all, but when we were introduced to Miss Alma Peregrine, also known as “The Bird” I immediately had Helena Bonham Carter in my mind as the perfect person to play her; I know she wasn’t the actress in the movie but I could not get her out of my mind, in every scene she was in, I had this pretty, dressed properly Bellatrix Lastrange image! I could even hear the woman’s posh voice in my ears, that’s how bad it became for me!

Unfortunately, I figured out who the villain was towards the middle, which really caused me to become conflicted about how I would explain it on here. I’m not usually notorious for spotting ‘Easter eggs’ in anything, so as I continued, I was extremely hopeful I was wrong but it didn’t happen and I was super bummed that I put the two together so quickly.

After I finished it on Goodreads, I gave it a 3/5 stars. It was a four at first but I feel like I wasn’t as interested like I thought, plus how it ended wasn’t up to par with others I’ve read this past year, so with that being said I will not be reading the other five books in the series. However, in the mist of writing this review, I’ve probably watched the film and I am hopeful I will write a post about it too, but it will depend on whether I make it through the entire movie, which is why I never wrote about the Wonder film back at the start of the year.

Have you read Miss Peregrine’s Home for Pecilaur Children by Ransom Riggs? What were your thoughts on it?
