Album Review: “Ritual” by In This Moment

19366082_10158910196285054_3916349050705466920_nIn 2014, the band In This Moment released their album “Black Widow” and I was really pumped for it because I enjoyed their 2012’s record “Blood” hell I even got my mom into the title track, I was so proud of myself! However when I reviewed “Black Widow” I wasn’t really into it as I figured I thought I would be. So when I found out they were releasing a new album this year I was hoping for another bad ass album but figured it would be smart to be prepared for another flop.

If you don’t know anything about In This Moment, they are a female fronted band from California and the members consist of Chris Howorth on lead guitars, Randy Weitzel on rhythm guitar, Travis Johnson plays bass, and Maria Brink is the lead vocalist. They recently replaced their drummer after he left the band early this year, but I don’t think they ever released the new guy’s name because I have yet to found who it is! So I apologize for not having that piece of information.

The album starts out with an introduction. Since “Blood” they’ve had some sort of interesting intro to the whole thing. It makes you want to sit on the edge of your seat after each one. For Ritual, the introduction is called “Salvation” and it’s like two minutes long, but it’s mostly of creepy sounds. I don’t suggest listening to it in the dark! Don’t judge me either. It has these thunder like clashes and sirens and you hear a deep male saying different chants in the background. At the end, you have Maria quote something, my guess is something from the bible but I’m not sure on that. The actual first song of the album is their first single “Oh Lord” and I will say, I didn’t like it the first time I heard it. However, later on that day my outlook of it did a 180 and I’ve loved it ever since. It has this sultry vibe and I tend to think that with previous ITM songs. Anyways, the lyrics definitely have a gospel kind of feel and surprisingly so does the music even if it’s like really dark and heavy rock.

Second track is “Black Wedding” and when I saw this, my mind went directly to Game Of Thrones and the whole “red wedding” episode. They just ended the new season and I’m still pissed at that scene because I usually see those types of things coming and I didn’t, so I’m kicking myself even today! Anyways, this has a very creepy piano beginning, almost has a feel of carnival vibe. Thankfully when the choruses start, it subsides. It features a legendary rocker by the name of Rob Helford of Judas Priest, which explains a lot because as I was listening to it at first, I didn’t think that sounded like Maria! At the end has Maria saying another quote and it is the intro to the next song “In The Air Tonight” which is a cover of Phil Collins’ song. Now I will say I have never heard the original and I’m betting my dad would make me listen to it sooner than I think. It is mellow, slow and ominous. Maria does a good job of making this song come to life.

The next one is “Joan Of Arc” and again, it has a seductive sound. At first, I was a bit worried about how this was going to go, but I actually like it. The lyrics talk about the same things that the legendary Joan of Arc was accused of in mid-1400’s. We have “River Of Fire” next and I really like this one as a whole. It has a fierce, dominating sound to it and you get a small sections with Maria’s powerful roar. I feel like she doesn’t do those as often as she used to, or is that just me? It’s also pretty catchy, so it wouldn’t take me long to learn the words to this bad boy. The seventh track is “Witching Hour” and I’ve been wanting to know how this goes, because I had fallen in love with the title without even hearing it! It has a clear witch-y vibe to it and I liked that, it was just the music that I had a hard time getting into it. It’s very tame and there’s nothing really special about it. So I was bummed about that!

After, you have “Twin Flames” which sounds like it could be like a ballad in a way, Maria’s voice is very sultry and soft, music’s about the same but the volume does increase and you hear the heavier guitars more towards the choruses. It’s not bad! This was the other one when I saw the title I was like, “please be good” and thankfully I got this one right! It’s loud and theatrical, which is something that they’re becoming more known for both on stage and in their songs! The track is called “Half God, Half Devil” now you know why I wanted it to be good! “No Me Importa” is much more softer, you have the background sound of a piano against these harsh guitars. It has a good balance of sounds with the instruments used. I like it.

These last two songs start with “Roots” and this is another badass track! Very mysterious and I love the meaning of it. The strong lyrics is what gives it life. It’ll be another I will learn, however I hear quite a few “fuck”s in this too so I won’t be singing it out loud unless a couple of people leave me alone for a bit, which won’t happen! Anyways, finally we have “Lay Your Gun Down” and this is definitely a ballad, they usually have their slower stuff at the end of their albums and it works very well because after building up the listener, you need a good ballad to kind of get them ready for the end of the cycle. It is hauntingly beautiful, that’s about all I can say! I have a few songs to check the lyrics and this will be included in the list.

I have to say, I was worried about this album, but I am glad how good it sounds! I know whenever I listen to albums I tend to compare the next record against their last and I’ve noticed I do that more whenever I’ve reviewed it on here. I don’t mean to do it, it just sort of happens. If this came out after Blood, I would have been a happy camper because I think it’s in the same category of that album than Black Widow, but like always that’s my opinion.

What do you think of In This Moment’s “Ritual” album? How are you whenever you’ve chosen a favorite album, are you very judgemental to the next or do you try to keep an open mind about it?

August Playlist

aug

Hello!

I debated whether or not I wanted to do another playlist post for August but I had made my Spotify playlist way before I published the wedding playlist so there was no question about it.

Ever since the June and July Spotify playlists would keep switching to a broken link, I have been trying to figure out a better solution so I found where you can link the playlist by URL and I did that for July’s playlist but as far as I know nobody’s listened to it! I might just be listing out like the top 10 songs I listen to a month as an exchange? I’m hoping that’ll work for the moment.

If you want to hear the full AUGUST playlist just click here!

Rx – Theory Of A Deadman
Sorry Not Sorry – Demi Lovato
Through Hell – Palisandes
Points Of Authority – Sylar (Linkin Park Cover)
The Resistance – Skillet
River of Fire – In This Moment
Need Nothing – VÉRITÉ
Westering Home – Celtic Woman
Judas – Fozzy
Hot Water – Audien, 3LAU feat. Victoria Zaro

There were several album announcements I had heard this past month! I have to say I’m more excited for Demi Lovato’s new album compared to Taylor Swift. However, I am curious to see who she attacks in this one but at least Demi should be more lighthearted and positive! I’m getting really excited for Theory Of A Deadman and Nothing More’s albums as well! So far those are the only ones that are on my radar and I’m not making any plans to review them at the moment!

Before I end this post, I thought I’d also add the links of the reviews I’ve done this month as well! I have a couple more to complete that I’m hoping will be up for September! Hope you all enjoyed them and this mini playlist too! I’ve got one more for this month that goes up on Thursday, so you’ll have to keep an eye out for it!

The Wedding | Part Two!

20394728_827939504049379_348947217_o (1)

Hi 🙂

If you haven’t read any of the previous wedding blog posts these are all of them: Blondie’s Wedding DressBridal ExpoThe Bridesmaid DressesThe Bridal ShowerWedding Playlist –  Nails, Hair & DressesPart One.

Let’s begin!

Saturday morning was a bit of a blur because I remember getting up around sevenish and thinking, “mom will surely get up soon” because she told me we’d get up at 8am and go over to Blondie’s apartment and head over to the church. Well, my mother has been having issues with her alarm clock. She’s been hitting that snooze button a lot lately, and the day of the wedding was no exception! I think she got up maybe 10 minutes before she told her we’d be there. If you read the end of “part one” you know that all of our clothes we were going to wear over there were already at Blondie’s, well my mom put me in a Wonder Woman shirt. I wouldn’t had an issue with it if I hadn’t said what I did in my Maid Of Honor speech at the reception. I’ll get into that later!

When we got at the apartment I sat out in the car, patiently waiting to get this day started. When we arrived at the church, Blondie with her wedding dress in tow, found out that the doors to the church were locked after she had been told the night before that they wouldn’t be. So that was our first let down of the day! We sat out there under the canopy, soon after Jayde and Jace joined us. Somebody from the church itself came to unlock the doors and attempted to show my sister to turn on the air conditioners which again did not help at all! In our defense, the room the girls were given had like two fans so we definitely put them into good use when we all got there and during the ceremony!

Jayde worked on Jace’s hair and then once Dyllanne got there, she started working on my hair. While us girls were in the beginning process of getting ready, we had two little guests come into our room because they were early birds, both Jordan and Patty sat towards the back of our room and watched us and play on their phones. They also had their tuxes on! I’m pretty sure they were content on staying in there despite roasting in that part of the room. For some reason they left and all of a sudden we started hearing this banging going on and Blondie went running out and yelling at them because they were playing the drums! Skyela came a little bit after, she sat on the floor by her mirror she brought. Alli got her hair done at a salon and then got ready in our room. The only one who got there while we were to start doing pictures was Sam, but the poor girl had some issues with the zipper of the dress and had to get it fixed early in the morning.

We took the group and individual pictures in the large area of the church, I don’t know what it’s called so I apologize! All throughout the day, Brandon did NOT want to see Blondie until she walked down the aisle despite the fact he was there when she purchased her dress. He wanted to go the traditional route and so that’s what they did. So Blondie went first and we did group pictures with both bridesmaids and groomsmen. The littlest ring bearer Baby J was dressed up in his tux – he was so cute! He joined everyone and semi stayed still for majority of the pictures. He put up his devil horns inside the church area and what was interesting was after the wedding was over, our sound guy found Silento’s “Nay Nay” song and he started dancing. He did the stanky leg and then at the last he did a very inappropriate dance move which not only scared his mom but made me think in my head, “well we’re officially going to hell!”

Back to when we were getting ready, we had an hour to kill before the wedding was to start and so I hung out with my Aunt Laurie, Uncle Mike and nana for a bit. After talking to them for a bit, mom took me into the guys’ room as they had the cold room as my dad said as he was busy pulling up some of the girl’s zippers. Zippers on dresses are the worst! My mom pushed me out into the main area and I saw my grandma and grandpa. I got a good hug and compliments from both of them and then we all ran into the guys’ room and realized how much we deserved this room than the other one. Also, we had less of a mess in ours and we had more space!

And then it was time to line up.

Since I was in my push wheelchair, the best man, Allen pushed me down and then once we got to the crossroad Jayde pulled me back into my spot. Growing up, I was always curious to see who was in the audience; this was the one time that I didn’t care because I knew the focus was not on me and I was pretty content with it. When it was time for Blondie to walk, the song changed and I hadn’t even seen her yet before I started crying! I swore I saw dad cry though! She gave me her large bouquet and I had to hold both mine and hers in my between my toes. And I wanted them like this, because our original idea hurt my arms too much. I did not drop either one! They did this special thing in the middle with putting both gray and pink sand inside a frame of the two of them. I don’t know which one had it, but they mixed some of papaw’s ashes into it as well!

The ceremony was beautiful though and next we got to mingle with family and friends. I got a chance to bond with Baby J who did not understand why I wasn’t using my hands to do his spinner thingy. It was so cute! He also tried to push me around too! Thank god for Brandon’s dad though! When the guests all left, everybody sat out and chilled before going over to the reception area!

Everybody finally arrived there and situated ourselves in the small corners of the room. We all lined up once more and we were introduced and seated, but one thing I hated about it though was the fact Allen and I hadn’t even gotten halfway to the table before the DJ brought out the bride and groom. So I didn’t get to see that part, but oh well! We sat there for a bit, before everybody was allowed to get their drinks. I just wanted a sprite in the beginning, before I had any alcohol for the night, but the bartender I guess didn’t hear that I just wanted a sprite so he put a couple of shots of vodka in it and it was absolutely disgusting! However, I will say Blondie’s screwdriver drink was pretty good! I had some sips out that throughout the night.

We ate and it was time for the speeches. Allen went first and it was very sweet. Mine was a bit of a blur because I figured once Blondie started reading it out loud, she’d find the mistakes. I wrote out the speech so I imagined I’d have more than I thought. I did realize I never gave it an ending! I also couldn’t talk about Blondie much mostly because if I had, it would have been longer than a couple of minutes so I only talked about Brandon and the earliest memories I have of him, one of which was his loyalties on favorite superhero brand: Marvel or DC. I still think he fibbed and said Marvel so he wouldn’t get on my bad side, but now you know why I felt weird earlier that morning wearing my Wonder Woman shirt because that’s clearly DC–mom! And then I added a couple of notes for the both of them to remember down the line, in which Blondie proceeded to add things at the end of each part. I vaguely hitting her leg whenever she started doing this!

The last thing they did was cut the cake, thankfully Jordan took pictures and mom has video of it on her phone, although that has yet to grace Facebook. The DJ said “this can go either two ways, you can give it to each other nicely or stuff their faces” and Jayde, Jace and I were all like “she’d kill him if he did that!” and what do you know, he just shoved it in her face but it sort of missed her face (and dress) but he definitely got hit with it because she was pissed!

After the first dance, and father-daughter/son-mother dances were done, we were finally allowed to dance. Jayde was VERY happy about this! I had to be coaxed into it. I was way to insecure of my surroundings. I went to every dance in my electric wheelchair, so being in this chair freaked me out! I remember sitting at the edges of the bridal party tables in horror, enough that when Blondie came up and asked me why I wasn’t on the dance floor, I kind of burst into tears and I felt bad about that, because then I thought I would be ruining this for her. So I sat with Alli and her sister Shelby, trying to regain bits of my pride back. I felt bad for them but they were being nice and keeping me company, and then I saw Allen sitting in his chair by himself too so I decided to talk to him and we had a very nice chat.

And when our conversation had ended, I thought to myself “you know what it shouldn’t matter which wheelchair you’re in, you need a break from the bullshit you’re going through so go have some fun” all I remember next was saying “f*ck it” in my head and asking Allen to push onto the dance floor. He did and I basically danced the entire night away and it was so much fun! However, I was very glad whenever the DJ would play the slower songs because I needed a break in between or at least my butt and neck did. I saw my dad dance not only with my sister (twice) but with me (I tried to get away but he kept pushing my wheelchair back to him) and mom and it was a country song. The only country song I danced to that night! I was also pretty proud of myself of the fact that I didn’t go into a corner and cry my eyes whenever a slow song did play, that’s another bad habit I have unfortunately!

Before we decided to leave, I watched Brandon and all of the frat boys do this drinking game and I’m going by memory here called “Thunderstuck” I’m still not entirely sure what it is. Well dad almost did it but Blondie and mom talked him out of it. He was mostly around the groomsmen/frat boys the whole night so they had many drinks with him! He even hollered at Patty to give him a beer as he was doing the father/daughter dance. Blondie was livid! After this was over, mom and Blondie got started on cleaning and throwing things away, we were the first to leave in the actual party. Honestly, I could have lasted another hour, but not my body! The next day my dad and I were hurting in places that we forgot hurts a lot and again, I could have went out and danced again!

I had a lot of fun writing each post! I had never experienced any of the planning for a wedding before so I thought it was fun to blog about, I still wish I was more of a help in the process so it wouldn’t just been Blondie and Brandon dealing with everything. I wanted to experience the real chores of a maid of honor for her and I wasn’t able to do that. So I hope you all have enjoyed this posts!

Book Review: “Thirteen Reasons Why” by Jay Asher

198928_191726290863606_6633612_nI found out about this book while I was watching one of my favorite booktubers: Sasha! I put it on my Goodreads like I always do, but I didn’t actually think I’d ever read it. I mean a good chunk of the books on my profile will never be purchased but I still find and collect them to be added onto my tbr (to be read) list.

When it announced that Netflix was making it into a series, I began to see a sudden change, not in me but I found it odd to see everybody was talking about it because they were now watching it on their phones and desktops. Sadly, I don’t have Netflix so I’m not able to watch it, but honestly I kind of don’t want to, the book satisfied me. The only reason why I was able to read it was because both Blondie and Brandon binged watched it and then bought the book.

So the synopsis is about the story of a girl, by the name of Hannah Baker. She has committed suicide and without any warning, these rows of cassette tapes start arriving for different people. There’s no return address on the boxes so they have no idea who sends them, until they actually listen. We hear the story from Clay Jensen’s point of view when he gets his set of tapes and learns more about the girl that he’s had feelings for but these tapes tell you a very complicated and sort of twisted story of the reasons why she’s killed herself.

As I was reading from Hannah’s point of view because you get a very detailed section of what’s going on with her psyche throughout this process and then you have Clay’s emotions and movements too. Certain parts I felt like she was bragging in the way she was discussing each person and the things they were doing to her. There were a couple of times where I felt she wasn’t taking any responsible for her own actions until the very last. She could have stood up for herself, but she didn’t. And just so I’m clear, I am not saying she should have killed herself. In the way that the author wrote her out to be, it made her look this way!

Clay showed a lot of anxiety throughout listening to each tape, word for word. I loved hearing his thoughts and what he was doing whenever he’d listen to them; I thought it read so well. You could easily see everything in your head as he was doing them. Despite not watching the show at all, I was full of visuals whenever I’d read different scenes. Some would come in clearer than others, like the section about Tyler? I could see every part, but as far the party, that’s when I’d have the most trouble figuring out in the beginning. Thankfully, later on it gets explained and you have a more understanding of everything.

I thought the book was interesting! I originally gave it five stars, but I changed it to three on Goodreads because of my thoughts of how Hannah was portrayed. Something tells me, I’ll get some backlash from the whole paragraph and I would not be surprised if it’s my sister. This is a review, if I think an author has brought out a cocky side to a character that wants these people to understand what they did wrong than I will say something about it! There were parts where I did feel sorry for her but I stand by what I said above too!

Have you read “13 Reasons Why” yet? Did you like it? Since I haven’t seen the Netflix series, can you tell me of the differences in the show from the book?

Album Review: “The Storm” by ZZ Ward

19437444_10154388996340882_3300483539664199082_nLast year the bluesy pop singer ZZ Ward released an EP called “Love And War” and now she’s back with her second full length album “The Storm” which was released in early July! I didn’t even know she was going to put out another album until this sucker popped up on my Spotify one afternoon! I really do like ZZ’s combination of a bluesy, almost soul sound mixed with pop accents here and there. It’s really interesting!

So we’re going to start this now, track number one is “Ghost” and it starts off just like I wanted it to, very sultry and mysterious. It has a nice mellow groove, goes great with her high-pitched voice! If you’ve never heard of her music before because it’s not overpowering in any of the areas. It’s perfect. Second is “Cannonball” featuring Fantastic Negrito and it is so bluesy and I love it! I love hearing the guitars and faded out piano notes in the background. It’s soft and sexy! I also think this Fantastic Negrito is a perfect addition to the song. That’s another quality I love about blues music is that with the right melodies and vocalists, it will turn anybody on! Oh, and I love the harmonica! I definitely don’t hear that anymore! Third is “Help Me Mama” and I feel like I heard this before listening it for this review. This has more of a gospel-soul sound, which the title indicates that right away! At least it did for me.

Next is the title track “The Storm” and it starts out with a light piano and guitar with ZZ’s voice, though its pretty softer in this song. In fact, the entire track is pretty mellow but it’s not exactly a ballad. You can clearly hear an orchestra in the background and it has a couple of fiddles in there too! It’s very nice! Fifth is “Domino” featuring Fitz and I’m thinking it’s the same one from Fitz and The Tantrums and I was right! This one definitely has more of a pop song vibe to it. I’m fine with it, because I think it’s nice to take a break from one genre to create something else in the other, so it has a good balance so far! After that one is “Let It Burn” and we’re back on the sassy, country-blues sound again! Considering I’m not the biggest country fan, I’m still shocked this gets by! This one has some good bass in it, which freaked me out, but I like it! I hope this gets used on So Do You Think You Can Dance because I think somebody could do great things with this one! That’s all I’m saying!

This next one is called “Bag Of Bones” and it’s very quiet, there’s nothing really to it and I actually like it. She’s letting the lyrics guide you and vibe is allowing you sway back and forth. I really like the acoustic guitar towards the end. It gives it a nice edge. “She Ain’t Me” is next and I was very ecstatic to see that we’d have a breakup song on the album! If there wasn’t one or two on a blues album even I’d be concerned! However it has more of a pop song to it so that part kind of bummed me a bit, but it’s not all that bad. The harmonica pops back into this one but I think I liked it more in the other song.

We’re almost done, the ninth track is “If U Stayed” and we finally have ourselves a ballad! It’s only her with her guitar and piano. It’s a breakup song, but it’s also gentle and very sweet at the same time. Next is “Hold On” and we’re on the upbeat train again, but it doesn’t sound obnoxious like I freaked it would be as second to last songs tend to be, which isn’t a bad thing. I usually like them. The last song is “Ride” and it features Gary Clark Jr. It was also featured on the soundtrack for the Disney animated film Cars earlier this year! That should have been my indication that ZZ was coming out with new music right there! Anyways, it has a good beat, very pop-y and a little bit bluesy. What more can you ask for?

I always look forward to new music by artists and bands, but once I hear a good album I tend to become very picky. Sometimes I want to hear something different from that person(s) because I think music should evolve and I don’t like seeing an artist being held back and stuck in the same genre and singing the same words over and over again. However, there are some were I do love the music they create enough that I don’t want them to change so much. I mean, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. So I think ZZ’s second album is amazing and I think it’s one of my favorite albums to come out this year! If you’re counting, that’s two so far!

Are you a fan of ZZ Ward’s music? Have you listened to “The Storm” yet? What were your thoughts?

The Wedding | Part One!

20394728_827939504049379_348947217_o

Howdy!

In my last post, I thought that I wouldn’t do the full four posts like I had wanted because of the fact we didn’t take very many pictures on Friday, but then two days later I realized Blondie did in fact take pictures of the layout of the reception area and decorations. Unfortunately, I had asked too late because she had just deleted them! I was bummed because they were literally my last resort, but she was in the process of trying to put up the decorations for sale on the barter pages. So she started sending me those pictures instead that way you all would get an idea at least!

Thursday was the day where Brandon, dad and the other groomsmen were to get their tuxes and I thought I heard a lot of complaints of women thinking their garments weren’t going to fit them correctly–myself included–until I heard my dad worry about the fact that his pants would be up to his ears! I had to exchange the word because that’s not all of what he said! Blondie went with these two and took pictures. According to her, poor dad was yelling across the stalls where they were changing to Brandon because he didn’t have a clue how to put it on! I thought it was cute and sad all at the same time! This was seriously the first time we’ve ever seen him in a tux so when mom got the pictures, I was in shock but also a bit impressed on how much he was willing to do for his youngest daughter!

Friday was the day of the rehearsal! This was the day that dad was the least looking forward to and he complained majority of the time!

We started the afternoon going to the reception room and putting up some of the decorations! The tables and chairs were already put out when we got there and there was a massive gap between the bridal party, dance floor and the guests tables. Blondie was told they were like that for in case of fire, but it was a huge amount of space! Anyways, when we first got there I was allowed to roam in my chair which I relished in I’m not going to lie. I needed to see how much movement I would be able to do if this was where we were going to party. I also had a secret agenda too, we weren’t exactly sure how tall these tables were going to be so I could feed myself  and we needed to know if I was going to need the thick book I use whenever I go into the living room! Apparently our loveseat is higher than my bed! I rolled myself over to my seat and it was a perfect fit! Blondie placed my straw inside my glass before we left too!

Jace and Dyllanne were there to help out. Sam came later once we were finishing putting the lights on the tables. Brandon’s mom bought the table decorations, they were just simple things which is what Blondie wanted so it wouldn’t be so complicated to take down after everything was over. Once I inspected my seat I began to roll myself back over to the stew of boxes and I told Jace to place the bigger candles inside an empty box so I could place them on the bridal party’s table. The bottles were at the edge of the tables and I figured I was able to put them up there or somewhere close. I was thankful that we were the ones that did this because I decided to wear the same dress I wore for the bridal shower so I had my legs up in the air a lot more than I realized but hey, I wanted to be of good use.

Every table got one candle and mason jar with a bouquet of flowers on top! We had to do some rearranging at the last because we had twice as many flowers and jars than tables so we switched out some of the original flowers in the bottles and exchanged them with the brighter pink ones.

After we were finished and we had added our fourth bridesmaid Jayde to the fun, we went to the church where we were sat and waited for at least five of the groomsmen! There were only two of them there at the church and roughly half of Brandon’s family sitting in the chairs. When we got there, we met up with Alli and her younger sister whom I haven’t seen in a really long time because she’s now in her teens! Thank you Shelby for making me feel extremely old! Ten minutes passed and the last bridesmaid Skyela had arrived but we still only had two groomsmen. Within 20 minutes later, not only did my dad fall asleep in the chair and slightly bonded with Patty and Will, I saw two gentlemen. One was really tall and that was Jordan and the other was Isek about five minutes later I saw a familiar face! Allen (best man), his brother Alex and Lance came walking through the doors. We were all there now!

We started with getting lined up by Blondie and at this point she had turned into a royal bridezilla. Since Allen and I had the good spots, we were the last ones before the flower girls and ring bearers. While we were practicing going down the aisle, Allen and I decided to have some fun and we did some pop-a-wheelies. I’m still surprised we didn’t get scolded by dad or Blondie by the second time around! It was hot as hell in that church so if we didn’t have any fun, somebody was going to pass out! And yes, that’s my excuse!

My mom and I were originally going to spend the night at Blondie’s while Brandon stayed at the frat house with the groomsmen, but once we were finished with the rehearsal it was super hot and both of my folks stomach’s were sour so we ended up going home while the stuff we had brought with us stayed at the apartment. I had to sleep with my childhood pillow which is flat as paper and two fleece blankets that weren’t long enough to reach my feet! I wasn’t exactly thrilled but it ended up being a good thing in the end! Everybody else went to the rehearsal dinner at Wings & Rings and Blondie had fun with her girls from her ISU days!

Next week you’ll finally get the details of the actual wedding day!

Book Review: “The Ring And The Crown” by Melissa de la Cruz

17200974_1190394871070094_2385203544738160469_nBack in April, I got a chance to purchase a new book! I found it at Wal-Mart for about $8 and it was called “The Ring And The Crown” by the author Melissa de la Cruz. If she sounds familiar, she’s written the Blue Bloods and Witches Of East End series. I immediately recognized her name so my exceptions were already high to begin with, but it wasn’t long before this book wasn’t hitting that mark.

The book starts with Aewlyn and shows how much power she has and how she can control it since she’s been away to Avalon. The second character is Princess Marie-Victoria who is heir apparent to the Lily Throne, while her mother Queen Eleanor and her magical adviser Merlin (and Aewlyn’s father) at her side. Marie has been plagued with sickness throughout her life so she’s still quite frail but as heir she will do her duty to the people of London. However, she does not want to, plus she doesn’t even want to marry the Prussian Prince Leopold after he opened Pandora’s box to win the war – in an act to bring peace to both sides, these two will have to marry to secure the alliance.

However, there are more characters included into the story than besides these five people. You have Prince Wolf, who is Leo’s brother, Isabelle of Orleans, who was arranged to marry Leo as a child while her father was still alive to secure the family fortune and an American named Ronan who comes to the season searching for not only a husband but a title to help her secure her family name as well! And this is where the review turns a little sour. So if you haven’t read it yet, I don’t suggest you to continue reading this next section!

There are a lot of pros and cons to the story. I liked the outline of the ball, magic and the two main characters, but there were unfortunately too many cons in the story as well! The amount of characters and their roles with each other can be extremely confusing if you’re not careful. I think Isabelle could have been just a mistress to Leo and that’s it, but instead her story line is as big as Marie. And I felt Ronan and Wolf could have been a separate story altogether.

One of the biggest things with the plot that I had trouble wrapping my brain around was the time frame. It talks about London and the Prussian Empire but there is not a direct date and I know because it’s a fictionalized story it shouldn’t matter, but if you’re going to talk about King Henry VII in certain sections, you need to be more clear on where it is at that time for all of these characters. Melissa gives you more descriptions on the fashion and magic, but the most important part of the story is missing!

Despite the fact that I have written out this book review, I have not finished the book. I still know what chapter I left off on, but I cannot continue to read it. I actually gave it a 2 on the Goodreads rating. I know my mom will think I let the reviews I read about the book itself has helped in my judgement but all they did was help me realize that not all books deserve a full 5 stars and if I don’t think a book is up to par then I need to stop.

If you’ve read the book, what were your thoughts on it? Did you ever finish it?
